The Steelers have not released the terms of the RFA Tenders yet but indications point to the Steelers giving everyone but Wallace the lowest tender.  That means they would get a pick from the original draft round that the player was chosen in.  The Steelers were cap strapped and did not have much money to give out so they went with what they thought they could afford.

That leaves the offensive line extremely vulnerable.  There are only 4 players who are interior linemen left on the roster.  One is a future contract player.  Now two of the other three can be had for free.  Both Doug Legursky and Ramon Foster are undrafted free agents.  If another team signs them the Steelers get nothing in return.  This is a very weak position right now.

If the Steelers were to lose one of these guys they would be starting John Malecki at guard.  Yep I said John Malecki.  It is early in the offseason but that is not a fun thought.  The team has not put much onus on the offensive line in the last 5-7 years but this is bad.  We have no depth and below average starters.  Willie Colon could slide down and Jonathan Scott could play tackle but if that happened and I were Ben Roethlisberger I would be scared for my life.  Even if that is the case most people have Scott as the next guy on the chopping block if we need to make cap room.

The Steelers can not really improve this position much during free agency either.  The team has no money.  That is why these guys got the RFA Tender that they got.  There is no chance of Ben Grubbs coming to save the day.  There is a very remote chance of even getting a guy like Jake Scott to take that little amount of money to fill that hole.

The Steelers could go to the draft as their are some good linemen available all the way up to round 4 who could start for this team.  The Steelers could pick up Cordy Glenn in round 1.  They could get Kevin Zeitler, Amini Silatolu or Kelechi Osemele in round 2.  Brandon Washington or Phillip Blake could be an option in round 3.  The Steelers could end up needing to take an offensive linemen in 3 rounds of this upcoming draft.  They have 3 guards and one center(Legs accounts for 2) on the roster.

The team has already cut down on many positions to save cap space.  They have spread themselves very thin at not only offensive line but in other areas as well.  While most of the starting group is still in tact on both sides of the ball there is no depth.  If someone goes down the team could be forced into a bad situation.

It may be time to release Casey Hampton and Rashard Mendenhall who are both in the last years of their contracts and are not expected to be ready for training camp.  That would give the Steelers another $8 million to spend on players they are going to desperately need.  The Steelers know what they are doing but it could be eventful to see how this plays out.
