Arlington, Texas _ I have long contended that a World Series creates a far greater civic buzz for the cities involved than those participating in a Super Bowl.
Why? World Series games are actually played in the team’s towns. The Super Bowl is played in a nuetral site. I’m not exactly sure why but the town is far more energized, the parties are far more festive, when the game is in town.
I’ll never forget the first Super Bowl I covered. It happened to be the Broncos’ last Super Bowl, XXXIII in January, 1999 in Miami.
The crowd that day stunk. John Elway and Rod Smith were brilliant. The crowd was terrible. The reason was the majority of fans in attendance were neither diehard Broncos or Falcons fans.
One reason there is so much excitement regarding today’s Super Bowl XLV is the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers rank 1-2, or 2-1, in ardent fan bases. Fan bases that travel. yet, Denver was coo-coo during Rocktober, 2007.
