Giants vs. Patriots. When this situation arose in 2008 the circumstances were different. The Patriots were still the cocky team that I, as a Jets fan, still hate today and also Randy Moss during his prime. I could go on and on about how much I don't like them, but I'll refrain for now. It was my sophomore year of college and most of my friends were Giants fans. The only two Jets fans in the group that day were Joe (who has submitted content for this blog in the past) and I. He decided that day to root for nobody and sat there watching with a scowl on his face nearly the whole time (he was photographed laughing at a commercial though [irrelevant]). That's one way to watch this game as a Jets fan.
I, on the other hand, do not hate the Giants. I never saw any real need for a rivalry between the two fan bases. We play one regular season game every three years, and even though they meet each year in the preseason, who really cares? When people ask me, I tell them I nothing the Giants. It's how I feel. They may as well be the Seattle Seahawks as far as I'm concerned except for the one day every three years that they play each other in a meaningful game. Therefore, I sat there and rooted for the Giants.
The game is a bit different this time around. Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses, and although the Patriots are still very good, nobody is going to describe them as unbeatable going into this game like they did in 2008. This Super Bowl is more about the what ifs than what the '72 Dolphins team will feel after the game. I'm still going to root for the Giants for the following reasons, most of which I learned from the last time:
  1. If the Giants win, I can feel good for my Giant fan friends around me. Conversely, should they lose it doesn't mean too much to me.
  2. I wont feel dirty following the game. If I rooted for the Pats I don't think I'd be able to forgive myself for it. Its one of those things that as a sports fan you should never do. Don't ever root for your team's arch rival.
  3. If the Giants should win, as a Jets fan you can still pull the "I rooted for the Giants when they won" card when your Giants fan friends bring up how you supposedly hate them (whether it be true or not). Doesn't work as well should they lose.
  4. It's the Patriots, and as a Jets fan your motto when the Jets aren't playing should be something along the lines of "F^#% the Patriots" at all times. I know its a lot like the 2nd reason but it was too true to leave out.
  5. For the above reasons, and the fact that I have no idea how Sunday's game will play out, I'm going with the Giants +2.5. I'm just gonna sit back, relax, stuff my face with the wings and sub we have ordered for the game, and enjoy. The unofficial holiday that is Super Bowl Sunday begins in about 24 hours. From 6:29 PM through midnight (no clue how long the game will take even though I've seen enough of these that I should have some semblance of a clue by now) Go Giants! Let the hate comments commence.
