ESPN sportscaster and former NFL lineman, Mark Schlereth has a wise NFL saying: “Preseason games don’t count, but they do matter.”
What he means by this is that the final score may not have an impact on a team’s regular season record, but the effort, progress and adaptation to live play shown in the preseason will have an impact that may change the result of some of those regular season games.
Preseason games are all about the lower tier guys. The reason fans watch is to see what kind of talent their team has in its depth chart. The most important quarters are normally the 2nd and 3rd — this allows viewers to evaluate players that will have an impact on substitutions and injuries — but there is a certain trait that should stick out when watching these early games. It’s not speed, athletic ability or even knowledge of the play book. The trait I’m taking about is confidence.
As stated before, the preseason tends to focuses on players that are trying to either...

Malcolm Gladwell made the topic trendy but outliers have been the bane of a statistical analyst’s existence all along. An outlier is essentially a number so far from the average (mean) that it seems out of place. In fantasy football we’re talking about statistical outputs that stand out from a player’s typical production. For example, Doug Martin‘s 272 total yard, four touchdown...
TAMPA, Fla. Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy left practice Saturday with a tweaked calf, coach Greg Schiano said. The severity is unknown.
McCoy, named to his first Pro Bowl after last season, limped off during a two-minute drill late in the workout at One Buc Place. After leaving the field, he walked along the sideline but did not return to live play.

In 2012, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense was historically bad — literally, they almost broke an NFL record for the worst statistical pass defense of all time...
When Doug Martin came on the scene he look the NFL by storm. The feature back is hard to find in the NFL these days but we have a new one in Tampa.
I don't usually like first or second year backs but this is a great situation in Tampa and a special player. Get use to penciling this guy in at the top of the board for the next decade.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are counting on the return of guards Carl Nicks and Davin Joseph to bolster their offensive line.
Nicks, who was an All-Pro in 2011, missed the final nine games of 2012 with a toe injury.
Joseph, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, missed the entire season after having surgery on his left knee.
Although the Bucs are being cautious this summer, both players...

According to an article on JoeBucsFan.com, Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Carl Nicks is still lingering from a toe injury suffered last season. In fact, he will have to deal with the blow for the rest of his life.
“I will have to deal with it my whole life,” Nicks said to the media. “Honestly, it is not 100 percent, yet. I plan on playing some this next preseason game and obviously...
Several rejected design ideas for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' rebranding and logo have surfaced recently. Check them out compared to what the franchise wound up choosing.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need a better pass rush, and according to coach Greg Schiano, that means they need a better Da'Quan Bowers.
Schiano has been on his third-year defensive end - during practices and after - all summer long.
''It's certainly not anything personal. We both want the same thing,'' Schiano said Saturday. ''He wants to be an every...
Myron Lewis the 2010 third-round draft pick who was cut by the Buccaneers last week has landed in Detroit.
A league source tells PFT that the Lions have signed Lewis.
The Lions have been looking for depth in the secondary and improvement on special teams so Lewis makes a lot of sense for them.
Tight end Dallas Clark is at that stage in his career where he will be limited to short stints with teams here and there as needed.
Clark is stepping in at the final hour to help the Baltimore Ravens according to the team.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that free agent TE Dallas Clark has re-affirmed his intentions of playing this season.
Schefter adds that a “deal could get done this week“
While still no official word on what team may have an interest, the Baltimore Ravens would make some sense. Injuries to established tight ends Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson have the Ravens tight end unit shallow...
FOXBORO, Mass. — The rest of the Patriots and Buccaneers were playing for second best on Tuesday afternoon.
Vincent Jackson was far and away the best player on the field at Gillette Stadium. The Buccaneers wide receiver schooled the Patriots’ defensive backs in the New England-Tampa Bay joint practice. It didn’t matter if Aqib Talib was covering him or rookie Logan Ryan, Jackson...
FOXBORO, Mass. – Aqib Talib spent last week covering the short, shifty, quick DeSean Jackson. This week, as the Patriots face off against the Buccaneers in joint practices, he’ll be matched up against Vincent Jackson, who the Patriots cornerback described as a “more bigger, jump ball receiver.”
There’s another storyline to be monitored, though. The Buccaneers are Talib’s...
