If Arian Foster and Matt Schaub were a little surprised that the stalwart of their protective offensive line was released today, they should imagine how he felt when he got the news.

Winston had started every game for the last five years, but his hefty salary ($5.5 million) made him an easy culprit for the chopping block. Ever the professional, Winston spoke highly of the team and the organization when he took to Twitter to let his fans know he had been released:

“Unfortunately I have bad news. The Texans have decided to release me today. Although it is a surprise, I have nothing but positive memories and great relationships that I have built over the years… Let me say thank you to Mr. McNair and the whole Texan organization. They have had big role in the player and person I have become. And last but not least to my fans and teammates. You guys are the absolute best! I will miss all of you more than you know.”

With the team already hard pressed for cap space, the move was likely done in order to free up space so that the team can try to resign linebacker Mario Williams. Even though Williams has alluded to being willing to give the Texans a home team discount, the Houston front office knows that it must come at least close to what other teams are going to offer to have a chance of keeping him.
