Detroit Lions’ General Manager Martin Mayhew says that signing their top wide receiver Calvin Johnson is just “workable.” This does not give fans the utmost amount of confidence that a deal will get done. (However, there is no denying that both Johnson and the Lions want to work out a contract extension.)
Management should not be blamed for the situation. The problem is salary. The Lions poor record before the 2009 season gave them the luxury of drafting top picks to improve their team. The problem signing players such as Calvin Johnson, Mathew Stafford, Ndamukong Suh, and Kyle Vander Bosch is that those 4 salaries almost make up fifty percent of their total salaries going into the 2012 season.
The Lions have to sign Johnson; he is the face of the franchise. He has been there, when they were at the bottom, and he wants to be there when they win the Super Bowl in the near future. The Lions will be faced with some tough decisions regarding their stars.

Nick Fairley had a disappointing rookie season by any measure. He had one sack, missed six games and wasn't always a factor when he was on the field. But Fairley's lack of production, brought on by a training-camp foot injury, hasn't done anything to sour the Lions on his future.
