As Michael Vick goes, the 2012 Eagles go. And for the Philadelphia Eagles to have any chance at bringing the Lombardi trophy to Philadelphia Michael Vick will have to play at his 2010 level.

The question is: Can he recapture that type of dynamic play again, or was the 2010 season just a blip on the radar? For most of Vick’s career he has been more of the injury plagued, turnover machine that turned last season’s “Dream Team” into a nightmare.

Now, last season’s underachieving 8-8 finish was not all his fault. There was plenty of poor coaching and personnel decisions (Casey Matthews to start the season), defensive letdowns, and untimely injuries and turnovers. Ronnie Brown’s falling mid-tackle goal line pass attempt pretty much sums it up. However, it’s a quarterback driven league now more than ever and having a consistent and effective quarterback who can stay on the field is the key to winning a Super Bowl. When dealing with a player such as Michael Vick it’s going to be hit and miss. Some days he will make head turning plays, other days he makes head scratching plays. Limiting the forced interceptions, fumbles, and unnecessary hits is more important and valuable over the course of a season than the 20-yard chaotic scramble that makes Sportscenter.

Those plays that make Vick such an exciting player are also his Achilles heel. In terms of health the best option is cross your fingers and hope Vick can learn to avoid big hits by sliding and getting rid of the ball more quickly. The Jason Peters injury does not help here. The rest of the line is solid, and should improve as the season progresses. However, Vick has only played one full season in his career and at age 32 most players are in the “what you get is what you get” stage of their career.

The only way to see what Michael Vick shows up for 2012 is to wait and see. Training camp will be starting soon, and Michael Vick has arguably one the best receiving tandems in the league. With a happy, well-paid Desean Jackson, reliable Brent Celek, and a possible breakout season in the making for Jeremy Maclin now is the time for the Vick and the Eagles to make a deep playoff run.
