The Buffalo Bills seem like the old Bills when they lost last week to the Cincinnati Bengals. But this is not your fathers’ Bills. The Bills defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 31-24 to maintain a share of the lead of the AFC East. The Bills own the tie breaker because they beat the Patriots in head to head competition. If you remember my preseason prognostication predicted that the Buffalo Bills would be a bottom feeder again this season. So far the Bills are proving me and every other sports analyst wrong. The Bills are currently 4-1 and playing pretty good football. However, the desperate “dream team,” is now 1-4 and playing really poor football. Eagles quarterback Michael Vick threw for four interceptions.
The Bills did not set the football world on fire this past shorten offseason. No one really knew if journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick would be the franchise quarterback for the Bills. Fitzpatrick appears to be that franchise quarterback every organization seeks. Coach Chan Gailey’s five year plan to turn the Bills around is ahead of schedule. This is the exciting time of the year where a Cinderella team challenges for championships. The AFC East has always been one of the league’s best division from top to bottom. The exception has been the bottom dwelling Bills and Dolphins the last several years. Unfortunately the Dolphins are still bottom feeders this season. But, the Bills are hoping the slipper fits.
The one area of concern for the Bills is how they respond on the road. Of course, the lost to the Bengals was on the road. Currently, the Bills are .500 on the road. They did beat the Kansas City Chiefs on the road in the season opener. The Bills will travel to play another NFC East opponent next week when they travel to New York to play the Giants.
