The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

San Francisco 30 @ Green Bay 22

The Good

Better than last year?

The San Francisco Defense. Okay, fine. The San Francisco 49ers might just have the best defense in the NFL. Blah. It kills me to say that. Not because I despise the other teams in the NFC West, but before, the 49ers could have a good-to-great defense but the offense was so anemic, you didn’t really have to worry about them. After the beatdown they put on the Packers, at Lambeau, San Francisco, in my mind, is the odds-on favorite in the NFC. A positive turnover differential, 8 penalties (seems high) and 3 sacks (seems low), San Francisco is ready for January. Just don’t tell Kyle Williams. I thought the stars aligned last season for Harbaugh, can they do it twice?

The Bad

Leader rusher, fall on face.

The Green Bay Running Game.  Yes, the 49ers defense isn’t the easiest to run against, but this is embarrassing.  If you have MVP Aaron Rodgers running your offense you should be able to run it. A little. Cedric Benson’s longest run of the day was 4 yards, and that one run, was more than 20% of his total for the entire day. Green Bay will need to do a better job on the ground in subsequent weeks, because if they can’t run the ball, A little, Aaron Rodgers won’t be repeating his MVP award from 2011. And you can bet that 15-1 won’t be happening. The post-season might not happen. Get it together Green Bay, The rest of the NFC needs you to be on your “A” Game to keep San Francisco out of the Super Bowl, and to prevent an onslaught of 80’s flashbacks on ESPN.

The Ugly

RAWR! Too bad We can’t actually stop anybody.

The Green Bay Defense. Frank Gore is 76 years old. Randy Moss is collecting Social Security and Medicare.  Alex Smith contemplated going back to short sleeve white shirts and door-to-door bicycle harassment in the off-season. Green Bay’s athletic opportunistic defense should have been the perfect squad to force this California motley crew into a downward spiral of unforced errors. Except they didn’t. Clay Matthews had 2.5 sacks and that was it. San Francisco put up 30. David Akers hitting from just outside of Sheboygan, WI wasn’t worth anything extra. The 49ers shouldn’t be able, or allowed, to put up 30.
