Mention the name Danny Watkins, and Eagles fans will cringe. Now, lets be honest — playing offensive guard is pretty much a pass/fail kind of deal. You’re either serviceable or you’re not, and Watkins happened to be the latter. Drafted with the No. 23 pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Watkins selection came as a shock to a lot of people. How much of a shock? For starters, I remember watching the draft and not even recognizing his name. The guy wasn’t predicted to go in the first round, and this was considered a reach pick by the team. Offensive line was a need for the Eagles in that draft, so it’s not like the type of selection came out of left field. But with guys like Gabe Carimi and Derek Sherrod still on the board, to hear Watkins’ name was shocking. After all, they opted for a 26-year-old Canadian firefighter.
