It’s hard to believe we’re at the start of the new NFL year. The Patriots are coming off a Super Bowl loss, but 2012 looks to be another high level year and they are primed to get better.
Bill Belichick has to retool the wide receiver corps and continue to improve his defensive secondary. Given the track record of unable to develop wideouts from the college ranks, we feel that free agency is where the Patriots will make their bones in that department. So let’s kickoff the new year with free agency, and the 60 Max Staff!
It’s going to be fast and furious and the Patriots usually like to stay out of the fray. However, with $19 million to play with, another front heavy draft and Wes Welker tagged, they are ready to strike.

Patriots tag Wes Welker with hope of getting new deal done
Well, we waited all day for word to come down, and we did have questions about whether they were going to go through with it at all.
They didn’t wait to the very last minute, but they might as well have. Just before 3pm, the official press release came in:
"Wes Welker is a remarkable football player for our team and has been a vital component to our offense and special teams...
Wes Welker 'Glad' to Remain With Patriots for 2012 Season After Being Franchised by Club
There are times where NFL players are less than thrilled to be slapped with the franchise tag. Apparently, in the case of Wes Welker and the Patriots, this is not one of those times. The Pats franchised Welker on Monday afternoon, and late Monday night, Welker at least gave the impression that he's happy to be back in New England, when he took to Twitter to say that he was "...
Wes Welker Unlikely to Hold Out If Contract Extension Isn't Reached Immediately
Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker has always been viewed as the ultimate team player, and his loyalty has been considered one of his greatest assets off the field, too. That's why it shouldn't be viewed as much of a surprise that several people close to Welker believe if he's under contract, he'll honor it and won't hold out for a long-term deal. Welker's...
Patriots franchise tag Wes Welker
The New England Patriots officially placed their franchise tag on wide receiver Wes Welker on Monday afternoon, just over an hour before the 4 PM deadline to do so.
This move should come as no surprise to Patriots fans considering the success Welker has seen in a Pats uniform since arriving in New England before the 2007 season.
Welker's 554 receptions since...
Patriots place franchise tag on Wes Welker
Despite his gaffe in the Super Bowl (which, apparently, wasn’t a gaffe at all), Wes Welker is not leaving New England.
A league source tells ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Patriots will place the franchise tag on Welker Monday, ahead of the 4 p.m. deadline for teams to use the designation.
It’s an expected move by the Pats, who are still hoping to lock up Welker with a long...
Patriots put franchise tag on Wes Welker
Wes Welker recieved the franchise tag from the Patriots today
With a failure of sorts to come to a multi-year contract before Monday’s deadline to declare franchise players, the New England Patriots applied their franchise tag to Wes Welker.
It’s expected to be about $9.4 million but the key is that it prevents Wes Welker from hitting the open-market and allows them more time...

Report: Patriots to place franchise tag on WR Welker
The New England Patriots will place their franchise tag on wide receiver Wes Welker, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday, citing a league source.
The 30-year-old Welker led the NFL with 122 receptions last season, although he admitted he "let the team down" after failing to reel in a critical pass from Tom Brady during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI.

Patriots Place Franchise Tag On WR Wes Welker
New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker has officially received the franchise tag, Greg Bedard of The Boston Globe reports. Using the franchise tag allows the two sides to continue talks towards a long-term extension, the deadline to do so is July 15. Welker led the NFL in receptions (122) and was second behind Detroit's Calvin Johnson in receiving yards (1,569) in 2011...
Patriots to franchise Welker
No surprise here, the New England Patriots are expected to franchise wide receiver Wes Welker by today’s 4pm deadline. Only surprise is that it’s taken the Pats this long to do so, you can only assume that they were trying to workout a long-term deal. ESPN Boston say it was to avoid a hard ball type message to a guy that the team can’t succeed without.
