I will admit it’s been a much more subdued preseason this year for the Philadelphia Eagles. In fact, it was nearly uneventful from a football standpoint. The Eagles have made it to their first regular season game with only bumps and bruises and no catastrophic injuries.

Now the fun really begins.

I was very excited about this team as camp started. There seemed to be a calm determinedness coming from the Eagles. Contracts were settled and the team really seemed focused on the task of winning. I don’t doubt that they still are, but there are concerns.

Last season this team suffered because of poor linebacking play, poor safety play, a confused defense and injuries to Michael Vick among other things.

The Eagles acquired DeMeco Ryans from Houston and drafted Mychal Kendricks in order to help the linebacking corps. Kendricks is a rookie and Ryans has yet to show that Pro Bowl form in the middle, and that is a concern, evidenced by the fact that it looks like Ryans will not play in nickel situations.

The safety situation remains largely unchanged from last year as the Eagles hope that Kurt Coleman and Nate Allen will take the next steps in their development. I’m not convinced.

The defense at times looked exactly like it did last season… Confused, disorganized and ineffective. The hope is that the addition of Todd Bowles to the defensive coaching staff could help strengthen Juan Castillo’s game day play calling and help prevent the late collapses that plagued the Eagles in 2011.

And then there is Michael Vick. The harder he tries to prove to everyone that he is not injury prone, the more he seems to get injured. Vick hardly played in the preseason and there will be questions about how prepared he will be to start the season, and how long he will last once play starts.

If all of this sounds familiar to you, it should. They are the same issues and questions that this team had going into last season. A season in which they went 8-8 and fell way short of expectations.

I do think the Eagles are a better team than they were last year, I’m just not sure how much better. I predicted the Eagles would go 10-6 last season. Unfortunately, I can’t see them doing much better than that this season. The difference being that 10-6 would likely get them into the playoffs this year.

The talent is there. I’m just not sure if they will be able to put everything together. And at the end of it, as I’ve said for a long time now, I’m not sure Michael Vick is the QB that could lead this team to the promised land of a Super Bowl championship. Vick hasn’t won a playoff game in 8 years in the NFL. I certainly hope that changes this year, but I’m far from convinced of it.

Prediction: Eagles 10-6 and make playoffs and win one game.
