The mainstream focuses on the stuff that catches the most attention when it comes to cornerbacks - interceptions, picks returned for touchdowns, fumble recoveries, and forced fumbles. Yes, those things are very important as it is the stuff that turns the tide of the football game. What about how many receptions and yards the cornerback gives up? Or what percentage of passes are completed in their direction? Run support? Tackling? How often the ball is thrown in their direction. At the end of the day it can make or break defenses and opposing team's gameplans. An interception could be the result of an awful pass, a deflected ball, or just in the right place at the right time.It doesn't reflect the full play of a cornerback, where so many other variables are factored. The Rams' Janoris Jenkins had a few highlight plays, three interceptions returned for touchdowns along with a fumble recovery for a score. What the coaches and general managers might look at is the 66 receptions for 715 yards and five touchdowns that he gave up.How about the 18 missed tackles that Atlanta's Asante Samual had. Or the fact that the Rams' Cortland Finnegan allowed 73 percent of passes to be completed with him in coverage. The story and reality goes deeper than just a deflected ball the cornerback catches.
