Found January 09, 2012 on The Lions In Winter:
The Lions are not there yet. In one of his final radio segments, Tom Kowalski projected the Lions would go 8-8. He said that they’d taken big steps, but in terms of matching up with the NFL’s elite, like the Packers, they’re “not there yet.” We saw that dramatically illustrated Saturday night. We also saw how close they are. I talk a lot about the “story of the game,” a high-level narrative that explains the forces that forged the final score—or, in some cases, why the final score is a lie. This morning, the only story anyone wants to tell is that the Lions’ cornerbacks are terrible. The problem is, that story isn’t true. Yes, the Lions safeties surrendered two touchdowns by leaving receivers completely uncovered; there’s nothing the cornerbacks can do about that. Lions defensive backs got their hands on potential interceptions that they didn’t bring in—but the Lions picked off 21 passes this season, fifth-most in the NFL.  The Lions struggled to bring pressure with their fr...

Schwartz: Important first step for Lions

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Coach Jim Schwartz isnt minimizing the success the Lions had in 2011, but he still regards it as a step in the right direction and not a landing spot. The goal of winning the Super Bowl hasnt changed for Schwartz. The Lions fell short of that, making the playoffs with a 10-6 record but getting eliminated in the wild-card round with a 45-28 loss at New Orleans...

Brees fuels Saints in blowout win

Record-shattering Drew Brees threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns, and the New Orleans Saints poured it on in the second half for a 45-28 NFC wild-card victory over the Detroit Lions on Saturday night. Brees hit on 33 of 43 passes while throwing for the most yards in a regulation playoff game. He highlighted his night with three completions of at least 40 yards. As usual, the...

NFL MVP Award Should Be Split Between Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees

Through most of the 2011 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers was the run-away favorite for the NFL Most Valuable Player Award. It wasn’t until the New Orleans Saints’ QB Drew Brees’ started shattering long-time passing records and a Packers loss to the Chiefs that it became a close race. In the fifty three year history of the AP MVP Award,...

Brees, Sproles help Saints pull away from Lions

Drew Brees passed for 466 yards and three touchdowns to lead the New Orleans Saints to a 45-28 win against the Detroit Lions in an NFC Wild Card Game.

Detroit Lions shredded by Saints

For the very first time in my brief sports writing career, I don’t know where to begin.  First, I should start by saying that the 45-28 drubbing the Saints put on the Lions seemed a lot closer than the score for much of the game. The result just doesn’t seem right.  Yes, the Saints were the better team on Saturday night, converting five of six second half drives into touchdowns...

Saints vs. Lions Recap: Puttin’ a Lil Stank On ‘Em

In their playoff win against the Lions, the Saints Put Up 45 Points and never punted. Yeah, what else is new. Sean Payton went for it on 4th down on the Saints’ own 38 yard line. Oh okay. (Yawn!) Drew Brees pulled off his 7th straight 300+ yard passing game? Um…so your quarterback doesn’t do that? Nola Chick isn’t being smug. (Well, except for referring to...

Saints Are Hot, but They Have Been Stopped

The New Orleans Saints right now appear unstoppable. In brushing aside the Detroit Lions Saturday night in a wild-card playoff victory, the Saints’ jazzy offense was in perfect rhythm in both its passing and running games. Now the Saints march into Candlestick Park this Saturday to meet the 49ers in a divisional-round NFC playoff game. Yet the 49ers are taking solace in the...
