On 1943 on this date the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles had decided to combine teams during World War II to keep the NFL alive.
At time the Steelers had only six men left under contract. The Philadelphia Eagles had 16 players on the roster. Steelers’ owner Art Rooney knew that the league needed at least eight teams to survive. The 1943 NFL draft was a complete waste of time, most of the players that were drafted went off to the war instead of joining NFL teams.
At the time Lex Thompson was the owner the Eagles, was not as keen on combining the team since he at least had 16 players under contract already. Thompson did going along with the ideas because of what Rooney did for the Eagles in 1941. This explains why the two cities are considered married.
