Time to Pickup Jason Witten, Drop Terry Glenn

Posted November 01, 2006 on Jeff's Blog:
On the verge of a third straight season in which his stats have decreased across the board, Jason Witten has come up big recently posting 70+ yard games in each of the last two contests. He also scored his first TD of the season Sunday night in Carolina. Tony Kornheiser doesn't exactly light up the MNF booth with intelligent analysis, but he occasionally says something of value on PTI. Yesterday, he made the connection that Witten's increase in production is due to the change in QB's. Drew Bledsoe's immobility had forced the Dallas Cowboys to max protect which often meant keeping Witten in to block rather than run routes. Romo's mobility in the pocket allows the Cowboys to again utilize Witten as the pass receiving weapon he is. Beyond that, most inexperienced QB's tend to have a better rhythm with their backs and TE's before they become comfortable with their outside guys. Romo won't be shying away from T.O., but Witten's looks should continue to increase, possibly at the expense of Terry Glenn, who was the one Cowboy receiver that benefitted from having Bledsoe behind center. Below are the stats of Jason Witten and Terry Glenn this season broken down by who is throwing them the ball. Jason Witten With Drew Bledsoe - 5.5 games, 16 catches, 165 yards, 0 TD With Tony Romo - 1.5 games, 10 catches, 152 yards, 1 TD Terry Glenn With Drew Bledsoe - 5.5 games, 27 catches, 358, 3 TD With Tony Romo - 1.5 games, 6 catches, 72 yards, 0 TD
