It has been a few weeks since we posted on the NFL’s top players at each position, so let’s get back at it. Today we are going to take a look at the NFL’s top Cornerbacks in 2012.

5. Charles Woodson – Green Bay Packers

Charles Woodson might be aging and losing a step with each day, but he is one of the best corners the NFL has. With the amount of experience he has, and the amount of football knowledge he has acquired over his 13 year career, he is still on top of his game. But just because he is older doesn’t not mean that he has completely slowed down, he is still able to take the opponent lined up opposite him out of the game. Quarterbacks and coordinators tend to look to the other side of the field if Woodson is on there. He is one of the least targeted cornerbacks for a reason.

4. Brandon Flowers – Kansas City Chiefs

Brandon Flowers might be a smaller cornerback, but what he lacks in size he makes up with toughness, skills and intelligence. He is rarely caught out of position, and can play in press coverage. He is also a quick corner, but lacks the elite level speed. Flowers plays the ball aggressively when it is in there and attacks it. One of the biggest knocks on Brandon is his 5’9” frame, especially in the red zone where bigger receivers can get the jump balls over him.

3. Joe Haden – Cleveland Browns

Joe Haden might not get the respect that he deserves from fans because of the team he plays for, the Cleveland Browns. But, there is no doubt that all of teams know who he is. He is was target the same amount of times as the top corner on this list in 2011. While he did not have any interceptions in 2011, he does attack the ball as he led the NFL with 17 passes defended. He also the speed and quickness to stay alongside any wide receiver in the league. And if your a quarterback and expecting him to make a mistake, don’t. He rarely is caught out of position and is able to process what he sees quickly.

2. Nnamdi Asomugha – Philadelphia Eagles

There was question whether Nnamdi Asomugha was worth the amount of money he received when he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. He did not adjust well to the scheme, and it didn’t help that the lockout didn’t allow him the time to adjust. This past season, he allowed twice as many completions than he did in 2010. But by the end of the year, he found a way to fit into the defensive scheme. He is a very fluid player, and can cover any receiver in the NFL. Like everyone on this list, quarterbacks tend to stay away from Nnamdi. He does not pick many balls off, but he has great reflexes and vision that allows him to stop the ball before it gets to its target.

1. Darrelle Revis – New York Jets

Darrelle Revis has the ability to complete take a receiver out of a game. He will be over a teams’ best pass catcher each time and will blanket them as if he was a snuggy. He has elite level speed and quickness, and he does not make mistakes. While only being target just over five times per game, he also allowed the NFL’s lowest completion percentage when thrown in his direction. If a receiver finds himself on Revis Island, he is stuck there for the game.

There are good to great cornerbacks in the NFL today, but these are the elite five in my view. Some can be moved around, but Darrelle Revis is undoubtedly the best of the best.
