Northwest Sports – Seahawks Look Back At Draft Picks, Plus The MLS Round-Up

Your favorite footy blog should cover this weekend’s action in Major League Soccer and you’ll see some previews of matches concerning the likes of Seattle, Vancouver and Portland.

However, the big news in the Northwest is Seattle’s draft, and there are a lot of people who don’t really know what to think about the Seahawks’ moves last weekend.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks opened up with the No.15 pick and they took defensive end Bruce Irvin out of West Virginia. BetOnline reviews may state that Seattle got the help they need in terms of a pass rush as Irvin can also play outside linebacker and was second in the NCAA in sacks with 14.0 last season, but a lot of folks think the Seahawks basically spent their first-round pick on a situational player that they could have waited to select.

The draft was defense-heavy for the Seahawks as eight of their 10 picks came on that side of the ball, but the most intriguing pick may have come in the third round when Seattle took quarterback Russell Wilson out of Wisconsin.

Wilson transferred to Wisconsin from North Carolina State and has exhibited tools to make him a successful pro, but head coach Pete Carroll is probably banking on Wilson to take Tarvaris Jackson’s spot as the backup behind Matt Flynn, who they just signed in free agency.

It is going to be a very interesting offseason and training camp under center for the Seahawks, who have a quarterback they don’t want, but may need (Jackson) and two quarterbacks that they need to see what they have (Flynn, Wilson), so keep an eye out, even if you’re not a sharp that uses bookmaker betting software.

MLS Round-Up

Vancouver leads the way for the Northwest MLS teams as they sit in third place in the Western Conference after a 1-0 win in Columbus, but before they host first-place San Jose on Saturday, the Whitecaps will travel on Wednesday to face FC Edmonton in the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship, which features fellow MLS sides Toronto FC and the Montreal Impact as well.

Look for the Whitecaps to be a heavy favorite in your online sports book on Wednesday. Seattle is a point behind Vancouver in fourth after a 2-1 win at Chicago, and they’ll be at home this week for matches against Los Angeles and Philadelphia. The Sounders haven’t lost in four home games this season and this is a major chance to move up the standings.

Meanwhile, Portland brings up the rear after a 2-0 loss at Montreal, and they’ll host Columbus this weekend in an attempt to stop the bleeding.

Columbus is in eighth in the East, so as bad as the Timbers have been, it isn’t a stretch to think they’ll be favored at home in most sportsbooks.
