The NFL Players Association has filed a grievance with the NFL that challenges Commissioner Roger Goodell's authority to suspend four current and former New Orleans players who took part in the Saints' bounty program from 2009-11. The complaint claims that conduct before the new collective bargaining agreement was signed last August is not subject to discipline by the NFL. It says only a CBA system arbitrator, not Goodell, should be able to punish players under such circumstances. On Tuesday, Goodell suspended linebacker Jonathan Vilma for the 2012 season; defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, now with Green Bay, for eight games; defensive end Will Smith, for four games; and linebacker Scott Fujita, now with the Cleveland Browns, for three games. The union filed its grievance Thursday night.

Roger Goodell hands out ” Bounty Gate” Player Suspensions

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced today the suspensions for the Saints players allegedly involved in the so called “Bounty Gate” affair. You will recall, unless living in a cave somewhere for the past several months that the league has come down quite hard on the New Orleans Saints for former Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams encouraging his players to injure select...

NFLPA files grievance challenging Goodell bounty suspensions

The NFLPA filed a grievance challenging commissioner Roger Goodell's authority to suspend four Saints' players for alleged roles in the bounty scandal. Before it is immediately dismissed as legal conjecture, consider the months-old CBA included a provision that dismissed off-field actions typically subject to fine or suspension if they took place before Aug. 4, 2011. The...

Trust Goodell without proof? No can do

The narrative is so nice and neat: Roger Goodell, good. Standing up for player health and safety. Jonathan Vilma and the other three players suspended by Goodell on Wednesday: monstrous for leading a ring that paid bonuses to Saints teammates for hurting other players at a time like this, when concussions are the big issue in sports. The NFLPA: Bad. Standing up for villains over...

List of Bounty Gate punishments handed out to players. Jonathan Vilma done for 2012.

The NFL has issued the long awaited player penalties for Bounty Gate. Saints MLB Jonathan Vilma as expected will get hit with a year-long suspension. The league concluded that as defensive captain, Vilma aided DC Gregg Williams in the implementation of the program. His suspension is effective immediately. For the complete list and a recap video of today's punishments please...

Roger Goodell: I Dat, I Dat, I Dat said Teams going to beat them Saints

The Commish's job to make the New Orleans Saints the Mr. Irrelevant team of the NFL this season is complete today after suspending some of the money-grabbers on the defensive side of the ball: Jonathan Villma 1 year suspension, Anthony Hargrove 8 games, Will Smith 5 and Scott Fujita 3 games. Just because Drew Brees did not make a tackle this season, why is the NFL not...

Bears players react to Saints suspensions

A number of Bears players took to Twitter today to express their opinions over today’s bounty punishments, which NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell levied with an iron fist.

Eli Manning likes how Roger Goodell has handled the bounty scandal

As New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning prepares to host NBC’s Saturday Night Live, he took some time to address the player suspensions that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell handed down on Wednesday. “I think he’s doing the right thing to make sure this doesn’t ever happen again,” Manning said. “There’s no room for any type of bounty system in the N.F.L. You have...

NFLPA files grievance over Bountygate suspensions

Earlier today, the NFLPA filed a grievance against Roger Goodell and the NFL regarding the suspensions of four players involved in the Bountygate scandal. The grievance states that owing to the new CBA (collective bargaining agreement) which was reached last year, the NFL does not have the authority to punish players for any conduct which may have happened prior to August 4th, 2011...

New Orleans Saints Scandal: Drew Brees Should've Been Suspended

Why are only four players being suspended for the Saints' Bounty scandal? I understand why Roger Goodell picked the four players he did for supensions but why only those four? Why not go after Drew Brees who also knew that the defense put bounties on players who play his position? Why not suspend a whole team for turning their eyes from what the defense was doing? Shouldn'...

Saints Nation: Player Appeals Unlikely To Yield Results

Will Smith and Jonathan Vilma wasted no time issuing statements separately at the news of their suspensions, making it known they denied the claims made against them (which aren't entirely clear) and that they were ready to pursue every avenue possible to fight these suspensions they deemed unfair. My level of pessimism on how this will play out is fairly elevated and my advice...

NFL suspends Jonathan Vilma for the year

You have to hand it to Roger Goodell, he is impeccable with this timing. Jonathon Vilma has been suspended by the NFL for the 2012 season due to his involvement in the bounty scandal with the New Orleans Saints. Will Smith has been suspended 4 games, while Anthony Hargrove, who is now with the Packers [...]

Junior Seau Death a Warning Call for the NFL?

I became a believer today.                  Not in the potential of a draftee.  Not in the justice system of Roger Goodell.  Not even in the beauty of the game of football. No…I became a believer in the sheer power of head trauma in the NFL.  I became a believer in the bad side of the NFL, for maybe the first time in my life. I’ve always been a fan of hard...
