Victor Cruz prepares to possibly hit free agency. Should the Giants sign him long-term?  Photo courtesy of AP Alyssa "G-Men Girl" Franklin BGB Featured Columnist The Victor Cruz saga continues in New York with many of us wondering what is taking so long in signing him. I believe Victor has earned the right to a long-term deal. Now, I don’t believe in throwing a ton of cash at him to keep him, but I do think that he should stay in New York for a long time. Victor Cruz has earned the right to have a long term deal. When most wide receivers usually have a break out season, some fail to have the same success the following year. Not Cruz, though. In the last two seasons, he has had over 1,000 receiving yards both seasons and has broken records once held by a beloved player from the past, Amani Toomer. He has been voted to the Pro Bowl twice and helped take the Giants to the Superbowl. Those are all great things to have on a resume. Especially, since he was undrafted in 2010 and 2011 was his first full year with the Giants. The other reason I believe he should receive a deal is because as much as I love Hakeem Nicks he has had his issues with injuries. Nicks is the number one receiver and when he goes down the Giants need someone like Victor Cruz. Rueben Randle is showing to be the number two or number three receiver but he is not ready to be the number one. Domenik Hixon is another good receiver who would be great at a two or three but not a number one. But Domenik is also a free agent who could decide to test the market and he also prone to injuries. I don’t know if anyone recalls the 2010 season when all of our wide receivers went down left and right and the Giants were pulling guys from the practice squads that were mediocre. I refuse to accept the team having to do that again. I know that many Giants fans believe that Eli can make a star out of any receiver, but do any of us want to take the chance of losing a premiere player? I would say not. Victor Cruz has shown he is not a one-season wonder. He has proved his case over and over again and has delivered. I also know that the Giants are the type of organization to chill. They are not going to rush to sign someone without thinking about it clearly and doing what is best for the team. I believe in both sides. I really hope that a deal can get done and that Cruz is a life long Giant or at least one for a long time to come. He is a fan favorite and who can live without that salsa? Victor’s rise to fame has been a fantastic story. It’s a story that young players and kids can look to and say that if he did it, then they can do it too. I think Tom Coughlin said it best in an interview yesterday when asked about the contract situation and I think it is the best way to end this article. “ He is a huge part of the Giants success and he is very, very popular. He is a wonderful young man, he is a great story. That story should stay here.”
