Found October 31, 2011 on Shutdown Corner:
Quarterback Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers has finally seen enough of the light after a disappointing start to his career to be among the top half of quarterbacks in the NFL. That's great for Smith and for first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh, who rolled the dice on his own ability to help Smith become an above-average pro quarterback. What Smith has been missing is elite and efficient targets in the passing game — while he ranks 17th among qualifying quarterbacks in Football Outsiders' metrics, no 49ers receiver ranks higher than 75th, and that's where supposed someday franchise receiver Michael Crabtree stands.  At least tight end Vernon Davis is in the top 10 at his position! So, as a result, Smith and Harbaugh have had to adopt, adapt, and improve. Against the Browns, the 49ers used a couple of different targets to help facilitate a 20-10 win. In the first quarter, there was this pass to left tackle (an former Central Michigan tight end) Joe Staley: Nice play c...

As the halfway point into the 2011 season has arrived, lets take a look at the 49ers pending 2012 free agents to be. Offensively: QB Alex Smith- Smith has really turned it around somewhat in most minds. While he hasn't thrown much, he has been effective in those that he has thrown....

The Resurrection of Alex Smith: Week 9 Predictions

"I don't love any of the Week 8 games, but I have Tebow-esque faith in myself, so here goes." Well, it had to happen eventually, a Tebow-esque 0-2 performance in Week 8. But, after being knocked down like Jay Cutler, I am going to do my best Alex Smith impression: Turning it around and avoiding mistakes. Alex Smith has a 9:2 TD to interception ratio, by far the best...

Frank Gore, Alex Smith, Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, they all are experiencing a thrilling first: 6-1, first place, primed for the playoffs. It's been so long for this franchise, none of these stars was even in the league when San Francisco last had this kind of winning roll. ''It feels amazing,'' Davis said. ''I've never been 6-1 before. I'...
