Adrian Peterson might not be ready to run with the Vikings' starting offense in the Sept. 9 opener against Jacksonville.

Trainer Eric Sugarman said Peterson is making expected gains in rehab from the Dec. 30 surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee. But not enough progress to advance from the incremental goals Sugarman is setting for Peterson.

"Let's make this clear: I'm still not going to be quoted as saying he's going to play in the first game. That's not fair. I don't know that," Sugarman said in a status update planned by the Vikings.

Peterson continues to motivate himself with public declarations that he'll be on the field in regular-season game action just over nine months removed from the Christmas Eve injury at Washington. Peterson hasn't experienced any setback and plans to display his recuperation progress to Vikings media at Winter Park on Wednesday.

Sugarman isn't surprised Peterson has 80 percent strength in his left quadriceps or that he can run full speed in a straight line.

"Now it's all the functional stuff," he said. "Which is really the hard stuff. That takes months."
