Steve Hutchinson is a potential Hall of Famer because of the way he used to play near-perfect games, a true technician in the running game and the recipient of many free dinners from grateful, protected quarterbacks. But as the 34-year-old finishes his second consecutive year on injured reserve — and his third year injured after he played through a biceps injury in 2009 — coach Leslie Frazier hinted at retirement for the team’s six-year staple. “He is still a guy who can play and be a positive addition to your football team,” Frazier said. “But he’ll have some decisions he’ll have to make after this season is over.” It’s conceivable Frazier was delivering a company line that parallels the harsh reality of the NFL business — either retire to save dignity, take a huge pay cut or be cut. That seems to be the situation with Hutchinson, whose play no longer merits his $6.68 million salary.
