Around the time former Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver Mike Wallace was ready to sign his free agent deal with Miami, I wrote one final article about him. I also swore it was my final word on the guy but I just can’t let go. Apparently, neither can Mike. Since signing his big money deal with the Dolphins, Wallace has been unable to leave his past behind him. While I’ll be the last person to fault Mike Wallace for taking the huge payday he would have never gotten from the Steelers, it would be a bit refreshing if he could move on from his former team at the same time. For reasons known only to Wallace, he continues to validate exactly why the Steelers really weren’t that interested in re-signing him. He has compared his second year quarterback Ryan Tannehill to his former QB and future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger and went so far as to say he’ll be just as good if not better. Ya know what Mike? You might be right. I doubt it, but you could be. Anything is possible after all no matter how unlikely. Wallace also went on to say this week that “In Pittsburgh, I knew I was [in] a six-month lease every time, a furnished apartment,” Wallace said last week. “I’d just bring my bag and be ready to go. Down here, I have to buy me a house, get settled in.” As they say Mike, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out of Pittsburgh. Wallace also went on to say “Everybody has a college mentality around here. It’s a lot different than where I came from. Everybody’s hungry. Everybody wants to get better, get to where we need to be — that’s a winning record.” So let me get this straight Mike. You want to go from an organization that competes for division titles and isn’t satisfied with anything short of Super Bowls to one where a “winning record is where we need to be?” Actually, I think the translation is more like this… “Miami has far less expectations and less pressure and there isn’t nearly the discipline there is in Pittsburgh.” Does that sound about right Mike? It’s OK Mike, you can’t ‘quit Pittsburgh’ just like I’m having trouble ‘quitting you,’ but that doesn’t mean I won’t try…. Again. Marc Uhlmann writes for and co-owns www.steelcityblitz.com.
