In 2011, former Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousin led Michigan State to play against Wisconsin in the first ever Big 10 Championship.  In a draft that was filled with star quarterbacks like Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill and Brandon Weeden, Cousins was one of the quarterbacks that went on the back burner.

After being drafted with the seventh pick in the fourth round, 107th overall, Washington drafted Cousins in a somewhat shocking pick, especially after taking Griffin III with the second overall pick.  It left a lot of football fans and mainly Washington fans wondering why they would pick someone like that, especially not knowing if the two quarterbacks can co-exist on the same team.  It will work out in the end though, because Cousins is, in my opinion, not a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Cousins was a good quarterback when he played for Michigan State, but having good wide receivers like B.J. Cunningham and Keyshawn Martin really helped Cousins look good during his time at Michigan State.  After spending his redshirting his first year, Cousins went on to be the backup of then quarterback Brian Hoyer.  Then, his last three years at Michigan State, Cousins threw for 8,821 yards with 64 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.  Those are very good stats, especially playing for a Big 10 team, but Cousins just doesn't have what it takes to be a starting NFL quarterback for a team trying to start over like Washington.

A suitable backup quarterback for a team is someone who is not a star-caliber quarterback, but a guy who can come in, run the offense and get things done.  A perfect example of that is Shaun Hill from Detroit.  When Matthew Stafford was injured in 2010, Hill and Drew Stanton combined to play very well for Detroit, and win a few games.  That is exactly what Cousins is for Washington.  He is the guy that if something happens to Griffin III or if Griffin III doesn't succeed, then Cousins can come in and replace him and do his best to lead the team to victory.

With all of the hype that has followed Griffin III, there is no doubt that Washington will use Cousins as the backup quarterback right now.
