[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="635"] Colin Kaepernick has big upside as a fantasy quarterback this week.[/caption]
It took guts to do what Jim Harbaugh did on Wednesday, as the second-year head coach of the San Francisco 49ers sat down and told the quarterback, who took the team to the NFC Championship game in2012 that he would be taking a seat in favor of Colin Kaepernick, who will get all the first-team reps this week in practice. The decision had nothing to do with health.
It was all about football.
It is a decision that's easy to understand, especially after watching the former 2011 second-round pick make plays all over the field against a stout Chicago Bears defense, totaling 255 total yards and two touchdowns for a total of 18.9 fantasy points.
Harbaugh, undoubtedly saw the potential to have a true difference maker at the quarterback position, instead of Smith, who has improved dramatically but is still much more of a game manager.
Kaepernick on the other hand, has a live arm and is extremely athletic. He was raw coming out of college but after a year of tutelage under Harbaugh, he looks ready to take his game to the next level and the 49ers to the Super Bowl.
So what does that mean for your fantasy football team? Can he get your team to the Super Bowl?
At this point in the season could Kaepernick be the answer to your quarterback conundrum?
The answer is a resounding yes, as long as he remains the starting quarterback for the rest of the season and if he performs as well as he did last Monday Night, he will.
In less than two full games, the young quarterback amassed 35 fantasy points and neither situation was ideal for fantasy production. Against the Rams, he was forced into action due to an injury to Smith, which is always harder than getting a full-week of starter's reps. Then he faced a very stingy Bears defense and passed that test with flying colors.
This week against, Kaepernick faces the hapless New Orleans Saints defense, which allows more fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks than any team in the National Football League. Meaning if he is the starter, which it appears he will be, he will be a top-10 fantasy quarterback this week and should be played ahead of quarterbacks like Matt Stafford, Cam Newton and Josh Freeman.
Kaepernick is not a sure thing but he has tons of talent and upside, so investing in him now could pay off in a big way down the stretch of the fantasy football season.

Two days ago after Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to victory over the Chicago Bears, Jim Harbaugh was asked who would be his starter against New Orleans. Harbaugh responded by saying, “I usually tend to go with the guy that has the hot hand and we have two quarterbacks that have a hot hand.”
Well, it was reported tonight that the ‘hot hand’ he is going with is Colin Kaepernick...
I have yet to meet a head coach who wants to deal with a quarterback controversy. Coaches, as a rule, like certainty and stability. Quarterback controversies by definition lead to the opposite. They create distractions when you're seeking focus, and they can spark division when you're searching for togetherness.
Colin Kaepernick was brilliant on Monday night in leading San...
Colin Kaepernick made a heck of an impression in his first NFL start against a very solid defense. Following the game, head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters that he hasn’t completely ruled out giving Kaepernick another start, nor is ready to bench Alex Smith.
“I usually tend to go with the guy who has the hot hand,” Harbaugh said, per ESPN.com’s Mike Sando. “We really...
San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is sticking with Colin Kaepernick as his starter under center - for now, anyway - as his team prepares for Sunday's home game with the Miami Dolphins. And, no, Alex Smith isn't out of this mix yet, either.
A day after a 16-13 overtime loss at St. Louis, Harbaugh accepted the blame for the fourth-quarter pitch that was fumbled by Kaepernick...
The San Francisco 49ers shouldn’t start Colin Kaepernick on
Sunday against the New Orleans Saints because he’s the hot hand but because the
Niners should “make the smart call” about Alex Smith’s health, according to Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle.
The 49ers should start Colin Kaepernick against New
Orleans on Sunday because somebody, somewhere, has...
1. Colin Kaepernick is Worth a Pickup in Most Formats
Although the 49ers have yet to commit to either Colin Kaepernick or Alex Smith (concussion) as the team's starter at this point, the upside presented by the former makes him a worthwhile speculative addition in most formats.
Kaepernick would presumably have his passing upside limited, just as Smith does, by the generally...
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is not messing around. According to Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter, Harbaugh informed Alex Smith that Colin Kaepernick will start at quarterback on Sunday at New Orleans.
Trotter’s report states that the decision was not based on medical reasons. Smith is recovering from a concussion suffered in Week 10 against the St. Louis Rams...
Even Chicago Bears' linebacker Brian Urlacher gave San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick credit after Chicago suffered a 32-7 loss on Monday Night Football.
It was really the least Urlacher could do after him and the rest of the Bears' defense put together an uninspiring at Candlestick Park.
Listen in to hear Urlacher's kind words to the second-year quarterback...
Regardless of his motives or how he minces words, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh made the correct decision by naming Colin Kaepernick over Alex Smith as the starting quarterback right here, right now. It may not lead to a more peaceful Thanksgiving Day among 49ers fans and media, who will now pick apart the call much as they did the pre-decision controversy. But that is the nature...
When Alex Smith returns to health there is no question he should return to the starting line-up for the San Francisco 49ers. Colin Kaepernick played a great game against Chicago this past Monday, that is true but it was just one game! As the starter for the 49ers Smith is 19-5-1 in his last 25 starts, which includes a 6-2-1 record this year. So far this season smith...
After a stunning debut last week against the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick showed the NFL world what he is capable of doing on the field. After the game, head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked by reporters if the starting quarterback position would be given back to Alex Smith when he was medically cleared after suffering a concussion. Harbaugh responded by simply...
If you pay any attention to the NFL, you know that Alex Smith has had an interesting career to say the least. The former first overall draft pick from the 2005 draft out of Utah had a pretty bum-like start to his career for the first six years, only to blossom in 2011 under the tutelage of newly-appointed head coach Jim Harbaugh. Smith had his best year statistically, throwing for...
The good times are rolling here at BC as the win steak continues. At this point it’s almost not even fair. We went 4-1 last week and confidence is higher than it’s ever been. Our friend Ashley Ilenfeld was a very worthy opponent, but finished 2-3.
This week we are facing off against another Ashley…model and Bears sexy superfan Ashley Brooke (go follow – @aYoN765).
