Weekly Salary Cap Fantasy Football leagues have been rapidly gaining in popularity over the last few years and it’s easy to spot their allure. Weekly leagues offer a fresh start each week, which is often appealing to fantasy owners who have become disenchanted with their traditional league team. Like their traditional counterparts, successful salary cap teams are built by finding the best value at each position, or in this case, avoiding overvalued players. Each week we’ll be choosing which player represents the worst value at each skill position.

Eli Manning
Eli Manning emerged as an upper echelon fantasy quarterback in 2011 and has continued that success in 2012, averaging 21.3 points per week (5th highest in the NFL). With weapons like Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks, and Martellus Bennett, it’s easy to see how Eli’s transformation into an elite quarterback has come to be. That being said, the Giants passing offense has their greatest challenge yet, as they travel to Philadelphia to play the Eagles, who have allowed a paltry 5.7 passing yards per attempt (best in the NFL). Eli may very well have a great game but we feel that there are safer options available that cost far less.

Jamaal Charles
Jamaal Charles broke out in a big way in 2010, earning over 1900 yards from scrimmage to go along with 8 total touchdowns. He wasn’t able to continue that success last season, however, due to a torn ACL that he suffered in Week 2 of 2011. After a slow start this season, Charles found his 2010 form last week as he ran for 233 yards a touchdown. His value skyrocketed in salary cap formats for this week, becoming the 3rd most expensive running back after just one good game. Jamaal Charles has as much upside as anyone at his position but this was his first good performance of the season (10 total fantasy points in the first two weeks combined), and his match up, San Deigo, is only giving up 3.6 yards per carry, good for 4th best in the NFL. We don’t think spending that kind of money on Charles is wise until he’s proven he’s actually back with a few more plus performances.

Danny Amendola
Danny Amendola really came on strong in Week 2, catching 15 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. This performance has made him a very expensive option at wide receiver, where he’s listed as high as the 11th most expensive player at his position, ahead of guys like Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith, and Larry Fitzgerald . By his season totals, he’s 3rd in the NFL in receiving yards. The reality, however, is that more than half of his numbers came in his aforementioned Week 2 performance against Washington. In the other two games he’s played in, Amendola has averaged 68 yards and no touchdowns. That makes us uneasy in and of itself, but when you account for the fact that Amendola’s Week 4 opponent in Seattle is the 10th best passing defense in the league, it makes him unplayable this weekend.
