Justin Dentmon, Washington Basketball Team: Dentmon was outstanding the Huskies’ road trip to Arizona. He scored 23 in a loss against Arizona and 30 in a win against ASU. Recently, Dentmon has looked like the best player on the Dawg’s roster, outplaying even Jon Brockman and fellow guard Isaiah Thomas.

His three-point shooting has now become a big part of his game. Going a combined 11-19 the past two games for 58% on three-pointers, Dentmon’s outside shooting should spread apart defenses and help open things up for the other players. And just as important, his senior leadership should help the Dawgs out come March. Grade: A
Super Bowl XLIII: In case you haven’t heard, the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl, 27-23. Sports writers across the nation believed that the game would be a blowout, as Pittsburgh was the heavy favorite. But the game was surprisingly close.
After the Harrison interception return for a touchdown, I still believed it was possible the Cards could come back. But five minutes into the 4th quarter, with Arizona still down 20-7, I was beginning to give up hope.
However, Arizona’s 87-yard drive, capped off by Warner’s touchdown pass to Fitzgerald, restored my hope. After the safety, I was getting pretty excited. And after Fitzgerald’s 64-yard reception, I was ecstatic. So you can expect that I was pretty disappointed after Pittsburgh scored to take the lead for good.
Nevertheless, the Super Bowl even exceeded my expectations. Though I always believed the Cards could win, unlike many others, the closeness of the game still surprised me. Another supposed blow-out turned into a hard-fought battle. And though my team lost, it was still a great game… which was good enough for me. Grade: B+
Washington Men’s Basketball Team: UW split their road series in Arizona, beginning with a 106-97 high-scoring loss to Arizona. However, the loss seemed to teach the team valuable lessons.
Coming into the game fresh off a No. 23 rank and a win against UCLA, the Huskies thought they had it easy against an under-performing Arizona team just 2-5 in Pac-10 play. They left the game knowing they could take no win for granted in this tough Pac-10, especially on the road. Also, they realized that they need to play better defense in order to get wins.
The Huskies then took these lessons into a tilt against No. 14 Arizona State and put them to good use, winning 84-71. The guards looked spectacular, with Thomas and Dentmon combining for 55 points.
The win was enough to move them up in the rankings, with Washington coming in at No. 22 in the latest AP poll. They also earned a spot in the coaches’ poll at No. 25. By avoiding a sweep, the Huskies put themselves at 7-2 in the Pac-10, tied for first and still well-positioned for the title and a high seed in the NCAA playoffs. Grade: B-
