For just about a year now, I have been telling my friends, acquaintances, and even total strangers that I am an owner of the Green Bay Packers. Granted, I only own one share but, hey, I’m still an owner. Mike is NOT pictured above…but he could be. (This terrific image courtesy of Mike Roemer Photo.)   Becoming An Owner Actually, I was going to buy a share when they offered the stock sale a few years prior, but my business partner nixed the idea. For some odd reason, she considered food and shelter for our four kids as higher priority items. It was, I decided, the price one pays for marrying someone who doesn’t have Green and Gold running through her veins. However, when the Packers offered stock last year, the kids had grown and left the nest and my business partner had long ago declared her free agency, so I decided to take the plunge and enter the world of NFL ownership. Sometimes, it seems, being a recovering husband has its benefits. So I plunked down my $250 and waited patiently for my stock certificate to arrive. Okay, it might be a stretch to say I waited “patiently” because I did learn the name, phone number, and specific route times of the UPS driver that delivers to my small town during that week. But a few days after I sealed the deal, to my delight…and the UPS driver’s relief, the certificate arrived. It was like the Mona Lisa had been delivered to my doorstep. I soon found out though that ownership of an NFL team is not all sunshine and roses. The week that my prized parchment went on my wall, wide receiver Greg Jennings went on the DL. They hadn’t even had a chance to take the field as “MY” Green Bay Packers and, already, a big cog in the offense had been sidelined. Still, the Packers mustered through the regular season nearly perfect, except for that toe-stubbing at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. But I knew in my heart of hearts that I would be marking my first year as a Packer owner with a second consecutive Super Bowl championship. Apparently, no one told the New York Giants. So…What Do I Get? So, what do I get for my Packer ownership status? Well, I can’t sell my share, won’t receive any dividends, and I can’t will it to my kids. No one from the Packers calls me regarding personnel moves, play calls, or game plans. I haven’t been invited to any board meetings. Heck, the NFL wouldn’t even take my calls after that blown call in Seattle that ended the lockout of the officials. It almost seems like no one associated with the NFL even knows that I am now one of them. But, I do get to tell my friends, acquaintances, and even total strangers that I am an owner of the Green Bay Packers. Plus I have purchased enough caps, shirts, chains, decals, and other accessories that clearly identify me as one of the chosen few hundreds of thousands. And every time I proudly declare that I am an owner of the Green Bay Packers, I know that none of my ill-advised Viking fan friends can make the same claim about their team. But, come to think of it, why would they want to? The post What It Means To “Own” A Piece Of The Pack appeared first on Midwest Sports Fans.
