Wide Outs Stand Out With all of the talk regarding the 10:00 am game on the road against an underrated team that was carrying momentum from a strong finish the year before, the Seattle Seahawks still came out on top. It wasn’t pretty or encouraging, but it was a victory. So we are 1-0 and heading back to Century Link to take on the 49ers. But which unit stood out the most? Had to have been the wide receivers. The defensive line was bending over for the Panthers O-line all game long – DeAngelo Williams averaged 4.75 yards per carry. The secondary did hold Cam Newton to another career low with only 125 passing yards, but he only had 23 attempts and the Steve Smith/Greg Olsen combination basically had their way all day. Russell Wilson couldn’t breathe in the pocket let alone wait for a play to develop. He used his legs and OC Darrell Bevell designed some bootlegs to keep him mobile and extend plays. He had a hell of a day considering what he had to work with, but his receivers made plays for him when he needed them to, mainly (UGH) Jermaine Kearse. Jermaine Kearse Kearse had a huge TD reception to put the Hawks in front. (Seahawks.com) I was always a fan of Kearse during his college days at UW. He always seemed to drop the ball in the most crucial of moments when playing the Cougs. How can you not love the guy? But now he is a Seahawk – and as a general rule, no matter the university, if you wear the navy and neon you are welcomed to the family in open arms. Kearse’s drop problems seem to be a thing of the past since his lasik eye surgery he had in the off season. With a game that was seemingly going nowhere on offense, Kearse followed a Stephen Williams drop with a 43-yard touchdown reception down the same sideline. It was a thing of beauty, as he leaped over the defender and snatched the ball out of the air with a strong grip. Very encouraging to see from the 2nd year wide out. Doug Baldwin Doug Baldwin quietly had a great day – 7 catches for 91 yards – including an outstanding snag on the sideline when Russell threw up a prayer off of his back foot. Baldwin is in his contract year, and after an injury-riddled 2012 campaign, is likely playing for a payday (hopefully from Seattle). If this game is any indication of his future efforts, we have a surprising battle for the number 2 spot during the absence of Percy Harvin. Golden Tate Another player in a contract year, Golden Tate is on several fantasy experts’ radars as a potential breakout candidate. He had an average day today with 4 catches for 51 yards, but the timing of the catches is what gets him on the list. Tate had two crucial third down catches late in the fourth that kept the chains moving and kept the ball in the offense’s hands. Without those plays, we punt to Cam and put our patched-up defense to the test. Fortunately that didn’t happen. I’m liking what I’m seeing from these guys. GO HAWKS!!!! CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THE SEAHAWKS PAGE IN OUR CLUBHOUSE SECTION!
