Why one perceived Titans schedule advantage is not what it seems
Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Titans, along with the rest of the NFL, are anxiously awaiting for the league's schedule release set to take place on Wednesday night at 8 ET.

Though the exact order of the schedule remains to be seen, the Titans do know which teams they will be facing in 2024.

Home Opponents: Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars

Road Opponents: Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, Washington Commanders, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars

Due to the Titans' 6-11 record and fourth-place finish in the AFC South, they will be matched up against other last-place finishers such as the Bengals, Jets, Chargers and Commanders.

It's a perceived advantage for a Titans team looking to get back on track in Brian Callahan's first year as head coach. While it sounds great to be playing other teams coming off of poor seasons, the Titans' advantage isn't quite as it seems.

When assessing Tennessee's schedule through the lens of last season's performance, the Titans have the NFL's 23rd ranked strength of schedule. Tennessee's 2024 opponents have a combined win percentage of .491 from the 2023 season.

What that data does not include is the fact that fellow fourth-place teams such as the Bengals, Jets and Chargers are in a much better place than the league's typical basement dwellers. Joe Burrow and Aaron Rodgers are set to return from injury in 2024, while Justin Herbert gets a fresh start under Jim Harbaugh in Los Angeles.

Sharp Football Analysis uses current betting odds and implied win totals to project which teams have the easiest/hardest schedules in 2024. This data reveals that the Titans are going to have a much more difficult path this season than most might expect.

In fact, Sharp Football Analysis ranks Tennessee's schedule as the sixth toughest in the NFL. For a team looking to curate a winning identity with a first-year full-time starting quarterback in Will Levis, it's going to make things a bit more challenging.

Hopefully, for the Titans' sake, the schedule is relaxed to start with winnable matchups before Levis and the team square off with the Super Bowl contenders on the slate. Either way, Tennessee must prove that they can hang with contenders before anybody in the nation media will give them proper recognition.

As for the Titans' schedule reveal, it might be impossible to top their viral schedule release video from 2023.
