Kellen Winslow Sr. is a Pro Football Hall of Famer and has a son in the NFL, but he'll concern himself with athletics on a bit smaller scale in his new role as vice president for athletics and wellness at Lakeland College in Plymouth, Wis. The college has about 950 students, and Winslow will oversee eight women's sports and 10 men's sports, including football. Winslow, 54, was introduced by the school Thursday and will start in his new role Sept. 10. The man who redefined the tight end position into a pass-catching spot while playing for the San Diego Chargers from 1979-87 spent the past four years as the athletic director at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. He was let go by that school in June in a move that the former president of the school told reporters was not about performance and was "just about making a change." For his part, Winslow is happy to get a fresh start. "This role at Lakeland fulfills two things I've been looking for - a place where I can continue to be involved in athletics and to implement a comprehensive student wellness plan," Winslow told the school's website. "Athletics is a major part of campus life and community engagement." Winslow left the NFL with 541 catches for 6,741 yards and 45 touchdowns in nine seasons, and he was inducted into the Hall in 1995. His son Kellen Jr. is currently a tight end with the Seattle Seahawks after playing four seasons with the Cleveland Browns and three with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Winslow Sr. told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he won't be involved with the football program other than helping the players with their off-field needs.
