Most people consider the final preseason game as a throwaway; regular starters don’t play, so it’s reserved mostly for guys who will be selling insurance three days later. But that notion, while grounded in some element of truth, isn’t 100 percent accurate. In fact, some on the bubble were able to play their way onto (and off of) rosters last week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Fozzy Whittaker ran for a 2-yard touchdown, Graham Gano added a short field goal and the Carolina Panthers beat the listless Pittsburgh Steelers 10-0 in the preseason finale Thursday night.
The Panthers (2-2) held the Steelers (1-3) to just 185 total yards.
Both teams sat their star players with just 10 days to go before the regular season begins.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Panthers have signed RB Fozzy Whittaker to a contract and placed rookie RB Tyler Gaffney on season-ending injured reserve.
Gaffney unfortunately suffered a torn lateral meniscus during Saturday’s practice, so it’s not all that surprising that they added some depth for training camp.
