Pitkanen feeling good, ready for more ice

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Joni Pitkanen had knee surgery Sept. 10, missing training camp, and has been able to practice only a few times. He missed five of the Canes' first six games, and had to leave the one game he played because of knee pain. Yet, Pitkanen played more than 28 minutes the last game, against New Jersey. The defenseman may do the same tonight against the New York Islanders...

Ray Whitney is playing his 1,000th NHL game tonight against the Islanders but the Hurricanes have their own celebration planned. The Canes will honor the winger Nov. 1 before the game with San Jose Sharks at the RBC Center. Whitney was one of the original Sharks when he began his career. Canes @ Islanders

Matt Cullen's power-play goal at 5:34 of the second has tied the score 1-1 for the Canes. Cullen scored on a shot from the goal line extended that appeared to hit defenseman Brendan Witt in front of goalie Dwayne Roloson. It came after Sergei Samsonov and Rod Brind'Amour had good scoring chances in a power play that had Eric Staal and Joe Corvo on the points. The Islanders led...

"They've worked their butts off and they have some high-end young talent there."...

For two weeks they worked and then for the final week of their stay they hung out in the city. Two of them were in their early twenties, the third about five years older. Terrific guys, all three of them, and they spent their...

Matt Karash: Gm 8 At NYI: Struggles continue

Put very simply, the Carolina Hurricanes just are not a very good hockey team right now. This is a not a prediction for how the season ends or the beginning of a doom and gloom prediction; a lot can and will change over the course of a long NHL season. But I think it is a perfectly accurate assessment of where this team is on October 21, 2009. The gritty, young Islander...

Raleigh mayor wants to replace 10-year-old arena

Dog-bites-man story of the week: An online poll (in other words, not worth the electrons it's printed on) of Raleigh residents shows they're overwhelmingly opposed to Mayor Charles Meeker's proposal to replace the Carolina Hurricanes' RBC Center, which only just opened ten years ago. Nearly 70% of those voting said they were opposed to building a new downtown arena, while 28% were...
