by Adam GretzFiled under: Senators, NHL Fans, NHL VideosFanHouse's Adam Gretz takes a look at his top 50 players in the NHL. No. 32 is Ottawa Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson.Prior to Daniel Alfredsson's arrival in Ottawa, the Senators were a laughing stock in the NHL, winning just 33 of their first 216 games. It was the worst record after three seasons for any expansion team in league history, and it almost seems impossible to lose that many games. Such is life when Norm Maciver is your leading scorer. While first-round picks Alexei Yashin, Alexandre Daigle and Radek Bonk were disappointments for one reason or another, it was Alfredsson, a sixth-round pick in 1994, that proved to be the cornerstone of the team.

Senators re-sign two and Ad space for sale on NHL jerseys?
Howdy from the nation's capital.
The Sens resigned two of their own today. Forward Jeremy Yablonski and defensemen Derek Smith. Both got one-year deals. Both aren't NHL-quality players and I'd be shocked if you see them this year in Ottawa. Yablonski is interesting, though he can't skate worth a damn. He is a 6-time Canadian gold glove boxer and to the best of my...

Monday Blog-Down - Obama vs Putin
Howdy from Ottawa. Below is a weekly tradition over at hockeybarn.com, where they BLOG-DOWN on a 'different' topic each week.
So this is the Blog-Down...BRING IT ON!!
The 'Evil' Russian vs the Fighting Illini. Putin has been 'really' running Russia since 1999. Obama has been ruling the U.S. under a year. Obama has great slogans and fundraising ability. Putin...
A Review of Bryan Murray’s trades
On June 8th, 2004, Bryan Murray was named head coach of the Ottawa Senators and resigned from his post in Anaheim. After two very successful years at the bench, Eugene Melnyk decided to shake up things a bit by removing John Muckler as GM and hiring Bryan Murray. Murray, who had spent 26 season before [...]
Foligno's wife dies
Janis Foligno, wife of Buffalo Sabres Hall of Famer Mike Foligno and mother of Sabres draft pick Marcus Foligno and Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno, died of cancer Monday in Sudbury, Ont., where Mike is coach and general manager of the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League.
Erik Karlsson: Small Fish in a Big Pond?
Of the eight defensemen under contract by the Ottawa Senators, seven of them suited up in the NHL last season.
The other is Erik Karlsson.
Karlsson, 19, is arguably the top prospect in the Senators system. The smooth-skating Swede was taken with the 15th overall selection in the 2008 Entry Draft.
The Ottawa faithful have already witnessed a sneak peek at Karlsson during...
A Conversation With The Ottawa Senators' Alexei Kovalev
In the year or so that I have been covering hockey I'm proud to say that I've gotten the chance to interview some big names in the business. Although most were announcers and analysts, very rarely is it possible for me to get a chance to interview a player.
For this next interview, I chatted with the newest member of the Ottawa Senators, Alexei Kovalev. The 36-year-old Russian...
HD Summer Thoughts
Although there is minimal NHL news on the radar these days, aside from reports from Jason Spezza’s wedding in Ottawa, I still do have a few thoughts to pass on:
From the “what the $#%& is happening here?” category, was Gord Miller actually calling a Saturday afternoon CFL on TSN game between the Riders and Eskies [...]
Mark Christopher: R.I.P. Janis Foligno.... plus a little more
From Sun Media:
SUDBURY - Janis Foligno, the mother of Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno, has died.
Few details are available, but the OHL Sudbury Wolves hockey club issued a release today announcing her death on Monday night. Janis was the wife of long-time NHL player Mike Foligno, who has most recently been with the Wolves as coach and general manager. She reportedly had...
Should the Sens go after Kessel?
After toying with Dany Heatley, it’s still unclear if Dany Boy will stay in the Nation’s Capital. If he is traded, the return would include a second-line centre. In the proposed Edmonton deal, Andrew Cogliano was that fixture. Now that it seems like it will take some salary cap budging to trade Heatley out of [...]

Summer With the Sens
There hasn't been a whole heck of a lot of change for the Ottawa Senators this summer. They've traded a guy (Alex Auld, to the Stars). They've signed a guy (Alex Kovalev, to a two-year, $10 million contract). They've drafted some guys (including giant Jared Cowen in the first round). But for the most part, the roster remains exactly the same as the one that missed...
