Remember when everyone was ******** about Justin Abdelkader being on the same line as Pavel Datsuk seemingly believing that he (Abdelkader) didn’t belong? Well how do you feel about that now? After sitting out two games well deserved games for a vicious hit on Toni Lydman, Abdelkader scored his second playoff goal this season coming shorthanded as the 7th seeded Red Wings defeated the 2nd seeded Ducks 3-2 in Game 7 to move onto the second round. Although it didn’t stand as the game winner, Abdelkader’s shorthanded tally may have very well of taken enough out of the Anaheim sail to propel the Wings to victory. Henrik Zetterberg got things going for the Wings scoring at the 1:49 mark of the first period. This came after scoring twice in Game 6 totaling 8 points in the opening round. The Red Wing captain however took a delay of game penalty late in the third period which resulted in a Francois Beauchemin power play goal making for a dramatic finish. Valtteri Filppula’s second period t...

Justin Abdelkader scores shorthanded goal in game 7

The Detroit Red Wings were tied 1-1 with the Anaheim Ducks late in the first period when Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey took a bad penalty.  Lucky for him, Justin Abdelkader was there to save the day.  Abdelkader used some great stick placement to break up a D-to-D pass by Francois Beauchemin and was off to the races.  Abdelkader came in on Jonas Hiller and beat him five-hole...

Young Red Wings keep growing up in these playoffs

This isn't the same Detroit Red Wings team that won four Stanley Cups from 1997-2008. It isn't even the same team that started this lockout-shortened season. When Nick Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom retired and Henrik Zetterberg assumed the captaincy, it was clear that the Wings would go through a transition period. Unlike some other teams that went through very lean periods...

Pavel Datsyuk’s advancing in EA Sports’ NHL 2014 ‘Cover Vote’

I've been out of the loop for a bit, so this bit of video game-related news from MLive's Josh Slaghter, via RedWingsFeed, comes as a pleasant surprise: The Detroit Red Wings advanced in the Stanley Cup playoffs. And Pavel Datsyuk has been making his way through the EA Sports bracket, reaching the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year in the voting for the NHL...

Khan: Red Wings may have Drew Miller’s services for 2nd round but Darren Helm remains out

According to MLive's Ansar Khan, the Red Wings may have another third-or-fourth-line option in Drew Miller, who believes that he'll be healthy enough to return to playing sometime during the Wings-Hawks series after suffering a broken right hand heading into the final week of April... “I don’t have a timetable yet; I need to talk to the hand specialist and see how...

Red Wings' reward for advancing is Blackhawks

The rebuilding Detroit Red Wings have advanced in the playoffs. Detroit's reward is a daunting matchup with the NHL's top-seeded team: The seventh-seeded Red Wings will face the Blackhawks, starting with Game 1 Wednesday night in Chicago. The Original Six matchup will be the last one in the Western Conference playoffs because Detroit is headed to the Eastern Conference...

Red Wings win Game 7 vs. Ducks

/SUDDENJUBILIATIONINREGULATION The final minutes felt a lot like Friday night, up 3-1 until a Ducks goal would make things far too interesting, and butt clenching and stuff. The Ducks wouldn't get the equalizer this time, though, and the Red Wings would perservere in regulation and, in all, an extremely hard-faught seven-game series a lot of people, myself included, thought...

Trying To Figure Out Filppula

from John Niyo of the Detroit News, The Wings don't have many pending free agents on the roster, but they do have a few, and none more notable - or mystifying - than Valtteri Filppula, the 29-year-old Finnish center who has become a lightning rod for criticism this spring. In this new-and-improved, salary cap-strapped NHL, where nearly every team insists its focus is...

Splitting the difference for Red Wings

Earlier in their quarterfinal playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks, Red Wings coach Mike Babcock scoffed at the importance of matching up lines. When your guys play good, whether youre at home or on the road, a lot of things happen, Babcock told reporters before Game 3. The better your team does, the more in control you are. When he (the opponent) starts chasing the game, you...

Valtteri Filppula’s Goal the Game-Winner as Detroit Red Wings Eliminate Anaheim Ducks: Video

Valtteri Filppula had a somewhat quiet playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks. But when the Detroit Red Wings needed him the most, Filppula delivered. The Wings’ forward assisted on Henrik Zetterberg’s early goal in Game 7, then tallied what would be the game-winning goal in the second period, backhanding one past Jonas Hiller. Filppula took a pretty pass from Danny Cleary...
