Most of you know of, or have heard of, the tradition in Motown where Detroit Red Wings fans will throw dead octopi on the ice during home games. Well, did you know there’s a similar, albeit less well known, tradition in Northern Manitoba, only instead of eight legged sea creatures the fans toss severed moose legs onto the ice? Yeah, neither did we. This past Monday night during the playoff series between the Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) Blizzard and Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, a fan was so excited that the Blizzard had defeated the Kings in Game 6 to force a deciding Game 7 that they tossed said moose leg onto the ice. How they got the animal limb into the arena in the first place is anyone’s guess, but it’s safe to assume there was a fair bit of subterfuge involved. Here’s Blizzard play-by-play announcer Bradley Karp with the totally gross, yet somehow totally awesome, moose leg, taken from his Twitter account… Wonder how that three-legged moose would feel knowing his cloven-hoofed appendage was part of hockey tradition? I’ll say he doesn’t care one bit, seeing that he’s more than likely dead and/or the main ingredient in a mouthwatering stew.
