I’m not in Pebble Beach covering any of this, but word has just come from the mouth of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman: The Avalanche will move to a new division next season. The NHL next year will go to a four “conference” setup, with 16 teams in the, let’s call it “West” for now, and 14 in the “East.” The Avalanche will play in a new conference/division with the following teams in it: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, San Jose, Anaheim and Phoenix. Other “conferences” will have: (Detroit, Winnipeg, Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville, Columbus, Dallas and Minesota) And (Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Ottawa, Buffalo, Florida, Tampa Bay) and (Philadelphia, NY Rangers, NY Islanders, New Jersey, Carolina and Washington). All teams will play those outside of their conference, home and away. The rest of the games will be in the division.
