Update, 6:15 p.m.:
Full Torts quote on sitting Avery (via Rangers Rants)...

"I don't think Sean's been dead on. Having said that, he hasn't had a bunch of ice time. I'm just having problems finding ice for him. I have other guys filling the areas and doing the things that I need done and I'm a little concerned about shootouts. We've struggled a little bit there so I'm going to put Erik in and see where we go from it.

"Sean played some good games for us when he came up. I think it's leveled off but I'm trying to be fair to him also with you guys. I haven't put him on the ice, it's awfully difficult to play that way. But I have other players doing the things I need done in situations that Sean is just not getting involved in."

...i seriously think Torts is watching a different player than we are.

Update, 5:30 p.m.:

Andrew Gross reports that John Tortorella says the reason Avery is scratched is because he's got other guys to do what Avery can do, can't find him ice time, and is concerned about shootouts.

...isn't that the reason Torts gave for sending Avery down to the Whale in the preseason? If he has guys who can do what Avery does why was he recalled?

Original Post:
The Rangers have announced that Sean Avery will be a healthy scratch tonight against he Panthers in favor of Erik Christensen.

Larry Brooks adds that Avery had averaged 5:44 over last six games.

...obviously Avery is to blame for the Rangers recent lack of offense. Unreal.

  • Seems like an old story. Tortorella benches Avery until the team appears lifeless and then inserts him to bring some spirit and hustle. Time and time again, Avery has done just that. But when you are barely playing, it becomes an increasingly difficult assignment. I've been away and had not been following my Rangers. They played very well last night against Florida with Avery a healthy scratch. I'll be at the game against Dallas Tuesday and hope to see Avery in the lineup. I'm not optimistic. It almost seems like Tortorella is setting up Avery for failure. As I had stated in my ' The World According to Jud" blog piece, this continues to be a personal thing for Tortorella. Too bad for Sean and too bad for Ranger fans. He brings an electricity to the Garden like no one else. I hope he gets the chance.
