The Selke Award is given annually to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game. Former Blues captain Rick Meagher won the only Selke Award in franchise history in 1990. Backes is in his sixth NHL season, all with the Blues, and tied for the club lead with 54 points (24 goals, 30 assists) while earning the third best plusminus among Blues forwards (15) and the seventh best home ice plusminus (19) among all NHL forwards in 2011-12. The 63, 225-pound forward led all Blues forwards in shorthanded ice time and was one of two to score two shorthanded goals while he also led the team with a career high eight power play goals. Last season, Backes became the first player in Blues history to record 30 goals, 30 assists and a 30 rating in the same season.
