Chuck Fletcher is trying hard to make a trade to help his depleted roster. That was clear the past two days when the Wild general manager was rarely seen in the team hotel’s courtyard without his cell phone to his ear and depth charts at his side. The Wild is without veterans Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise, defenseman Jared Spurgeon and goalie Josh Harding. Fletcher’s biggest priority could be goaltending, although Niklas Backstrom did his best during Thursday night’s 4-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes to alleviate that concern by making 39 saves for his third consecutive victory and the team’s fourth in a row. “Outstanding. Outstanding,” said coach Mike Yeo, who gave Backstrom the start despite rookie Darcy Kuemper’s 39-save effort in Tuesday’s win in Los Angeles. “You could tell he wanted the net.” Backstrom wouldn’t be outdone though by Justin Fontaine, who entered the night with eight one-goal games and left with his first three-goal game. Two games after Ryan Suter became the ...

Thank you, Minnesota Wild

Minnesota Wild prospect Mathew Dumba has been returned to the WHL, where he will join the Portland Winterhawks for the remainder of the season as the result of a trade with the Red Deer Rebels. The general consensus among industry experts is that this is the best place for him right now. Portland seconds that; with the loss of major talent this season that included Taylor Peters...

Minnesota Wild: Former UMD Bulldog Justin Fontaine scores hat-trick against the Coyotes

Coming into the season, a Wild player hadn't scored a hat-trick since January 17,  2010, when former Wild forward Guillaume Latendresse scored a hat-trick against the Phoenix Coyotes... Almost four years later a Wild player did it again against the Coyotes. The Wild now have two hat-tricks in six days. So, tip of the hat to former Bulldog forward Justin Fontaine for leading the...

An NHL player you never heard of made history Thursday night in Minnesota

Getty Images Justin Fontaine made Minnesota Wild history on Thursday night, tallying three goals in the Wild’s 4-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. The undrafted winger is in his rookie season with the Wild after signing an entry-level contract with the organization in April of 2011. It was the first hat trick of his career and the first time ever a member of the Wild recorded three...

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Justin Fontaine scored three goals, Niklas Backstrom stopped 39 shots and the Minnesota Wild won their fourth straight game by beating the Phoenix Coyotes 4-1 on Thursday night. Koivu believes he will return to the lineup before the Olympic break

Mikko Koivu, on crutches, met with members of the media after the Wild’s morning skate today. It didn’t take long to get the impression that, while the pain in his surgically-repaired right ankle is already fading, it will take much longer for his frustration to do the same. He, along with other key Wild players, has to watch his team play. And then there is the question of...

Fontaine's first career hat trick sparks Wild win over Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Six straight losses sent the Minnesota Wild into a downward spiral, the weight of the previous game carrying over into the next. Once the Wild learned how to put games behind them, good or bad, the wins started piling up. Justin Fontaine scored three goals, Niklas Backstrom stopped 39 shots and the Wild won their fourth straight game by beating the Phoenix...

Kings goalie Ben Scrivens delivers most unsettling videobomb in the history of videobombs (video)

We’re a bit late getting to this one, but during Tuesday’s game between the Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild at Staples Center, Kings backup goaltender Ben Scrivens — who apparently is nicknamed the “Professor” — presented a master class performance on the artistic process behind how to go about delivering a truly disturbing videobomb. […]The post Kings goalie Ben...

Fontaine's hat trick helps win earn 4th straight win with big 4-1 road win over Phoenix

I think the video below says it all.  The Minnesota Wild have steadily developed into a M*A*S*H unit.  (knock on wood) It seems like the Wild are losing another player due to injury with each game.  Normally fans get a bit anxious when their opponents wind up for a big slap shot because they fear its going to end up in the back of their net.  Wild fans now see the big slap shot...

Colorado snows Wild's 4-game winning streak in 4-2 Avalanche win

In the United States Marine Corps, the last part of basic training is the ordeal called the Crucible.  It is a 72-hour test of endurance, perseverance and mental fortitude as they prove they are ready for the rigors of combat.  It pushes the recruits to their limits and what is forged out of that process are Marines.  Maybe that is what is happening to the Minnesota Wild right...

Avalanche-Wild Preview

Even one win was hard to come by for Minnesota at the end of 2013. After a six-game skid, the Wild have flipped the calendar and are now chasing a season-best winning streak. The Wild will aim to stay perfect in the new year and win their fifth straight Saturday night against the visiting Colorado Avalanche. "When we were losing games, we were carrying that baggage into the...

For example, I get to see Mikko Koivu play for Finland against Zach Parise and the United States. This can be very confusing. With the Olympics on the horizon, here is the BMR guide to selecting...
