After the St. Louis Blues pulled out their 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in overtime in St. Louis last night, I was tremendously relieved.  Last year, the Kings took it to the Blues by completely dominating the ice.  I look back at that series and I think that the Kings won because they beat the Blues at their own game.Fast forward to today and you have to think that this has changed.  It has only been one game of course, but the Blues were back to their ice dominating ways.  This is vintage Blues hockey and is really the only way that this hockey club can win in the rarified air of the Stanley Cup playoffs.  Any Blues fans hoping for a scoring blitz or someone to channel Alex Ovechkin on this team has not been paying attention for the last few years.  The Blues are a grinding, in your face, defense oriented hockey team.  I do not mean to say they have no scoring, however if they are going to win in the playoffs they have to be true to their defense first mentality.  That i...

Alex Ovechkin’s inability to say “hockey at its best” leads to hilarious blooper reel

While shooting some sort of playoff promo, Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin is given the speaking line “hockey at its best,” which seems simple enough, until you remember that Ovi’s first language isn’t English. Hilarity promptly ensues. As funny as Ovechkin’s difficulty grasping the English language is, John Carlson’s spit-take is the real highlight of this blooper reel...

Alexander Ovechkin grooves to Drake song in a car with his buddies (video)

Say what you want about Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin, this video leaves little doubt that his reemergence into a dominant offensive force during the regular season apparently has him feeling fairly loosey-goosey heading into his team’s Game 1 showdown against the New York Rangers on Thursday night in the rivals’ Eastern Conference quarterfinals match-up. Uploaded...

Capitals storm Rangers in Game 1

Alex Ovechkin's franchise-record 31st career playoff goal got the Capitals started before less-heralded teammates Marcus Johansson and Jason Chimera scored 46 seconds apart, and Washington beat the New York Rangers 3-1 Thursday night in Game 1 of their first-round series. Ovechkin, a two-time MVP who led the NHL with 32 goals this season, crashed the net to score on a power...

Alex Ovechkin heads in right direction for Caps

At first, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was not a huge fan of first-time NHL head coach Adam Oates' attempt to move him from left wing to right wing. ''We tried it a couple of times,'' Ovechkin said, reflecting on the start of the season as he prepares to face the visiting New York Rangers in Game 1 of their playoff series Thursday night. ''...

by Richie Katz, TiqIQ To begin the shortened NHL season, The Washington Capitals won only two of their first 11 games. The playoffs seemed to be out of the question. Alex Ovechkin a great leader

Mike Wise of The Washington Post:He heard every knock, every stereotype, including the most disturbing: that a flamboyant, Russian player who speaks broken English did not have the qualities to galvanize all those gritty North Americans into becoming a special team, even though the Swedish-born Nicklas Lidstrom became the first European NHL captain to hoist the Stanley Cup in 2008...

The Creation of a Culture for Winning

It’s a queer feeling, moving about Washington in this the season of the calendar of our perpetual discontent, and actually feeling good about the Capitals’ chances. This morning, well post cherry blossoms, I have a startling message to convey: We ought to be optimistic. Not cautiously optimistic, but full-blown optimistic. There are a handful of key attributes to the very winning...

Special teams matchup may decide the series

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images North America One of the oldest adages of hockey is that to win games, you must stay out of the penalty box.  Nothing revolutionary there, it makes sense that you don’t want to give your opponent too many chances to outnumber you on the ice. It will certainly ring true in Round One, when the Rangers face Washington’s #1 ranked power play, which converted...

Earth to Richards, Nash

Alex Ovechkin at least had a goal. Searching for exactly what the New York Rangers' high-priced forwards did in a 3-1 loss in Game 1 of the first-round series against Ovechkin's Capitals on Thursday night takes you to the back page of the score sheet. Brad Richards was a minus-1 and had one shot on goal. Rick Nash was more active with five shots (and four more that either...
