There was no doubt that the Blues would sign Erik Johnson. The only questions were for how long and how much? Both were answered today when Johnson agreed to a two-year, $5.2 million contract with the St. Louis Blues.
While $5 million is no small figure, it’s just pennies on the dollar compared to others in the top draft pick fraternity. The likes of Crosby, Ovechkin and Kane have been instrumental in their respective team’s success. Leading in point production and play pivotal roles in deep playoff runs. In turn, they’ve been paid accordingly.
In Johnson’s 158 career NHL games are sandwiched around his lost 2008-09 season, he has 15 goals and 72 points. Solid numbers for a young defenseman. Just not the elite level of production that his counterparts routinely post.
