Kyle Brodziak scored in the sixth round of the shootout as the Minnesota Wild moved into first place in the NHL's overall standings with a 3-2 triumph over the Northwest Division rival Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday. Winners of seven of their last nine, the Wild (15-7-3, 33 points) skated past the idle Pittsburgh Penguins (14-7-4, 32 points) for the most points in the NHL. After Edmonton's Jordan Eberle and Minnesota's Pierre-Marc Bouchard scored in the first round, Minnesota jumped ahead in the extra format on a Mikko Koivu goal. Sam Gagner kept the Oilers alive in the third round, beating Wild netminder Niklas Backstrom between the pads. Shawn Horcoff and Dany Heatley traded fifth-round goals before Brodziak struck for the game winner, giving him his first-ever shootout goal. The victory gave Minnesota 11 wins in November, the most of any month in franchise history.
