David Desharnais scored the winning goal in the shootout as the Canadiens defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 Friday night at Nationwide Arena. Peter Budaj stopped the three shooters he faced to win the battle of the backup goaltenders. Curtis McElhinney was the busier of the two prior to the shootout with 38 saves. Budaj stopped 23 shots but had big saves against Nikita Nikitin and Brandon Dubinsky in the dying seconds. Something special: Lars Eller tied the score at 2-2 with a power-play goal at 7:34 of the second period after McElhinney left a rebound off a shot by Daniel Brière. The Canadiens power play, which ranks third in the league, went 1-for-4 while the Montreal penalty-killing unit, which is sixth, weathered three Columbus power play, including a two-man disadvantage for 36 seconds. Chucky provides spark: After the Blue Jackets took the lead with two goals in a 1:39 span, Alex Galchenyuk put the Canadiens on the scoreboard with a goal at 19:52 of the first period. Galchenyuk took the puck away from Fedor Tyutin and beat McElhinney on a breakaway. R. J. Umberger opened the scoring when Budaj lost track of a shot from the side boards and allowed the puck to slip through his skates at 15:33. Artem Anisimov was able to tap in a loose puck in front of the net while Budaj was trying to get back on his feet. He went down when Douglas Murray sent Jared Boll sprawling into the crease.
