Alexander Ovechkin scored twice and the Washington Capitals held on for a 5-3 win over the injury-plagued Detroit Red Wings on Monday night.
Mike Knuble had a goal and an assist and Keith Aucoin and Jason Chimera also scored for Washington. Alexander Semin and Marcus Johansson each had two assists and Braden Holtby made 30 saves to send Detroit to its fifth straight loss and seventh in eight games.
Kyle Quincey, Todd Bertuzzi and Danny Cleary scored for Detroit. Brendan Smith had two assists and Jimmy Howard stopped 17 shots.
Cleary put one in from a goal-mouth scramble with 7:08 left for his 12th goal to bring the Red Wings to within 4-3.
Chimera added an empty-net, power-play goal in the final minute.
Bertuzzi poked in a loose puck from just outside the crease 36 seconds into the third period for his 13th goal to make it 4-2.
Washington led 3-0 after the first period as the Capitals scored on two of their first three shots.
Ovechkin opened the scoring 7;48 into the game with the first of his two power-play goals in the period. He beat Howard with a one-timed slap shot from the slot. Knuble scored from the slot with 8;35 left in the opening period after a bad line change left all three Detroit forwards behind the play. It was Knuble's sixth goal.
An apparent goal by the Red Wings' Cory Emmerton with 6:56 left in the first was waved off when Tomas Holmstrom was penalized for goaltender interference. Ovechkin capitalized for his second man-advantage goal of the game by putting in a rebound with 5:09 left in the period for his 32nd goal of the season.
Quincey's power-play goal 5:15 into the second period put Detroit on the board. He beat Holtby with a one-time slap shot from the right point for his seventh goal that also broke the Red Wings' 0-for-31 drought with the man advantage. It was Detroit's longest stretch without a power-play goal since 1996-97, when it began the season 0-for-33.
Aucoin restored Washington's three-goal lead with 2:36 left in the middle period when he scored from the slot for his third goal.
NOTE: The already injury-riddled Wings learned on Monday that center Darren Helm will be out four-to-six weeks with a sprained MCL. He suffered the injury during Saturday's 3-2 OT loss at San Jose The team was already without captain and defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom (deep bone bruise in his right ankle), defenseman Jonathan Ericsson (broken left wrist), defenseman Jakub Kindl (strained oblique), right wing Johan Franzen (back spasms) and goalie Joey MacDonald (back). . Washington goalie Tomas Vokoun missed his second game with a lingering groin injury.

A little more than a week ago, an article entitled “The Washington Capitals — Hanging By A Thread” chronicled half a dozen reasons why the Capitals playoff chances were fading quickly. Since that date, there’s been little, if any reason, to change that opinion. There are certainly those who will argue that over the period since the 9th of March, the Capitals have a 3...
Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals produced some of their best hockey of the season.
The Detroit Red Wings seem to be at their worst these days.
Ovechkin scored twice and the Washington Capitals held on for a 5-3 win Monday night over the injury-plagued Red Wings, who lost their fifth straight.
The Capitals led 3-0 after the first 20 minutes.

DETROIT -- It was a mixed bag of news at Red Wings practice Tuesday.
Captain Nick Lidstrom skated for the second day in a row, goalie Jimmy Howard didnt practice because his groin has flared up again, and Ty Conklin will start in net Wednesday in New York against the Rangers if he clears re-entry waivers.
Other than that, it was just a typical day for the Wings.
Were hopeful that...
Red Wings back-up goaltender Joey MacDonald had an MRI today thanks to both back spasms and “shooting pains” down his legs starting during last Wednesday’s game in Anaheim, but the Red Wings released no information regarding his status during the morning skate (and that particular post will continue to be updated till near game time due to late-breaking gnus), nor did the Wings...
Whoever mocked the injury gods, please start apologizing immediately. This is getting ridiculous.
Goaltender Jimmy Howard, who missed three games this month with a strained groin, has suffered a relapse.
Not only that, but there's a chance that Conklin will be picked up through waivers too if some team wants to screw us. What does that leave? Here's Khan to explain...
Home cooking will be a more than welcome sign for the Detroit Red Wings. After a four game road trip in which the Wings failed to record a win and tallied just one point, they return to Joe Louis Arena to play seven of their last ten games.
While the Red Wings were struggling to put anything together, their division counterpart St Louis Blues were busy becoming the first NHL team...
The Washington Capitals were utterly outclassed by a superior hockey team on Sunday night, beaten down by a 5-2 score inside the Madhouse on Madison. The Caps trailed 2-0 after only seven minutes and never recovered. They got goals from Alex Ovechkin and Mike Knuble to make it a tad more interesting in the second period, but by that time, the game was for the most part over...
Look, we all need to hit the road sometimes. Whether it is business, holidays, or a simple getaway, we all are forced to leave the comfy confines of our home at some point. The Washington Capitals know this better than anyone, as they find themselves on the road quite a bit. Always the considerate bunch, they have decided to help out in the designing of some equipment that...
MLive’s Ansar Khan reports that Red Wings prospect and University of Notre Dame forward Riley Sheahan has exhausted his college eligibility by committing the following deed:

After a long day and other sad game last night, let's see who came out the winner of yesterday's battle. Victorious with 53.7 percent of the vote is Ugly Coyotes. Up today is #7 Mike Babcock in For a Few Wins More vs. #10 Todd Bertuzzi in Bertinator, Judgement Day. Voting after the jump.
Round #7: Which Poster Is Better? I hope Detroit wins a game before the...
Andrew Shaw and Bryan Bickell had three point nights as the Blackhawks dominated the Washington Capitals. The Hawks defense in the first period was overwhelming, not allowing a shot on Corey Crawford for over 16 minutes to open the contest. … Continue reading →
Earlier this month in the nation's capital, Washington's Alex Ovechkin repeatedly shot the puck at Philadelphia goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, but his Russian compatriot stopped every one of them. The two-time league MVP was slumping at that time, but has regained his scoring touch.
Bryzgalov, meanwhile, has been stellar between the pipes all month.
Coming off his second two...
