A quick look at the roster of the New York Rangers and it’s hard to miss the big names and talented former first-round picks dotting the lineup. Currently the Blue Shirts boast 11 former first-round draft choices, a former Vezina Trophy recipient and a Conn Smythe winner. That’s a lot of talent on one roster. Now that the Rangers have turned things around following their dismal start it might be expected that the return to form of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist combined with better play from talented defenders Ryan McDonagh, Marc Staal and Dan Girardi is behind the Blue Shirts resurgence. Also, a better understanding of the systems brought to Manhattan by new head coach Alain Vigneualt have undoubtedly contributed to the team’s improved play. While those factors have certainly played a major role it’s impossible to ignore the contributions of a generally overlooked and underrated former sixth-round draft choice from Sweden. Third-year LW Carl Hagelin may be as important to the success ...

Victim of numbers game, Mashinter sent down to Hartford

With Rick Nash’s imminent return to the Rangers line-up the team today sent Brandon Mashinter back to the Hartford WolfPack in the AHL. Mashinter appears a classic tweener, a very solid AHL’er with some NHL ability but whether with the Sharks or the Rangers, the physical winger hasn’t been able to establish himself in the NHL thus far. Having appeared in six games for the Rangers...

The Michael Del Zotto rumors and the search for a right handed defenseman

AP Photo/Kathy Willens With Michael Del Zotto sitting out tonight against Montreal as a healthy scratch, the trade rumors swirled again. This time Renaud Lavoie, a reporter from Montreal, noted that he is hearing Del Zotto could be had. Suit covered the possibility of a trade, specifically a Del Zotto trade, last week. Without rehashing the entire post, the trade rumors are a bit...

Taking stock of the Rangers at the 20 game mark

Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images About midway through October we asked everyone to have some patience after we started the season less than stellar. As I say every year — wait till the 20 game mark before planning a parade, trade, or handing out pink slips. Not every organization follows this advice of course, but most good ones do. As expected, the Rangers have now made the full...

New York Rangers: Michael Del Zotto healthy scratched and reportedly on the trade block

New York Rangers defenceman Michael Del Zotto will not be in the lineup tonight against the Montreal Canadiens and his absence is not the result of injury. According to Renaud Lavoie of the Journal de Montreal, the Rangers offensive blueliner…Read more →The post New York Rangers: Michael Del Zotto healthy scratched and reportedly on the trade block appeared first on The Hockey Daily.

Rangers’ Rick Nash says he will play this week.

New York Rangers forward Rick Nash who has been out with a concussion since October 8th, says he will play either Tuesday against the Bruins or on the road Thursday in Dallas. Following the Rangers game day skate at Bell Centre in Montreal Nash has this to say, “Hopefully one of the games Tuesday or Thursday for sure, as long as there’s no setbacks,” Nash said. “Everything’s...

Talbot, Rangers blank Habs

Ryan Callahan ended New York's four-year-old goal drought in Montreal and rookie Cam Talbot made 22 saves for his first NHL shutout and the Rangers blanked the Canadiens 1-0 on Saturday night. Callahan scored his sixth goal of the season for New York, which has won eight of its past 11 games. Talbot, who replaced Martin Biron as the backup goalie, became the first Rangers goalie...

Talbot’s first NHL shutout leads Rangers past Canadiens

Cam Talbot and the Rangers came into this Habitant House of Horrors and ate it up as if it were made out of gingerbread. “This whole thing here with the New York shadow over this place, I didn’t really get it,” Brad Richards said after the Blueshirts’ 1-0 Saturday Night Special of a victory over the Canadiens. “And I don’t think our new coach did, either. “Before...

New York Rangers: Rick Nash could return to lineup as soon as tomorrow

Since the third game of the 2013-14 NHL season the New York Rangers have been without superstar winger Rick Nash who suffered a concussion after taking an elbow to the head from San Jose Sharks’ defenceman Brad Stuart. Concussions rarely…Read more →The post New York Rangers: Rick Nash could return to lineup as soon as tomorrow appeared first on The Hockey Daily.

Game 19: Montreal….think we can actually win there?

Photo: AP After a disappointing loss to the Devils, the Rangers take the ice in Montreal to take on the Canadiens. This is the first of three straight games against playoff teams, so this stretch will tell us how far along the Rangers have come since their 3-7 start. That said, the Rangers don’t win in Montreal. Period. I don’t think I can remember the last time the Rangers won...

Talbot, Rangers Shut Out Canadiens in Montreal 1-0

Coming into this game it did not look good for the New York Rangers. They haven’t won in Montreal since 2009 four years to be exact. Carey Price was carrying a shutout against the Rangers lasting more than 200 minutes until now. The Blueshirts defeated the Canadiens 1-0. This game was different, the Blueshirts looked […]

What’s in Store From 1993-94? Rangers Unbeaten Streak at 11, Double Up Panthers

November 16th, 1993: Miami Arena, Miami, FL.:  It was a reunion of sorts when the Rangers travelled to South Beach to take on the expansion Florida Panthers in the first ever meeting between the clubs.  The Panthers were coached by none other than Roger Neilson who was coaching the Rangers as recently as last season.  Neilson was hired […]

Jan Levine: Game 19: NYR 1 MTL 0, Curse is Over, In Cam We Trust, LA @MSG Today

The Rangers exorcised some ghosts and demons, shutting out the Canadiens 1-0 for their first win in Montreal since a 4-3 shootout win on March 17, 2009. The regulation win was their first in Montreal since February 3, 2008. A power-play goal by Ryan Callahan, strong goaltending by Cam Talbot, excellent forechecking and four lines rolling were the keys to the victory. It's...

Does Mike Francesa not know who the New York Rangers head coach is?

Another day, another fantastic Mike Francesa clip.  This one comes to us courtesy Jimmy Traina and his debut Big Buzz column at Fox Sports (although my heart was set on the Fox Clicks name).  Here Mike in Long Island has a simple request - can Mike Francesa, the sports pope of New York, name the head coach of the New York Rangers.  Instead of answering the question and moving...

Game 20: Continue beating playoff teams

Photo: ESPN After a strong win in Montreal, the Rangers are home tonight to take on the LA Kings, who are without star goalie Jonathan Quick. Don’t let that fool you, the Kings have won two straight with Ben Scrivins in net, and will be looking to exact revenge on the Rangers, who beat them 3-1 in October. That was a different Rangers team though. On the ice, Daryl Sutter is an...

Rangers can’t solve a backup, shutout by Kings

AP Photo/Kathy Willens On Saturday the Rangers blanked the Habs 1-0 behind their backup goalie. Last night, they themselves were blanked 1-0 by their opponent’s backup goalie. It’s kind of funny how that works out. The Kings did to the Rangers what they did to the Canadiens, completely outworking, out possessing, and outplaying them in every facet of the game. If not for stellar...
