Don Cherry apologized to three former NHL enforcers for disparaging them for their views on fighting in hockey.

The traditionally outspoken Cherry publicly said he was sorry to Stu Grimson, Chris Nilan and Jim Thomson after calling them "pukes" and "turncoats" during a broadcast of "Coach's Corner" on Oct. 6.

"The first 'Coach's Corner,' I've got to admit I was wrong on a lot of things," Cherry said on Saturday. "I put down three enforcers, tough guys, my type of guys, I threw them under the bus. I'm sorry about it, I really am."

Cherry also admitted that it was wrong to note that Nilan and Grimson linked fighting in hockey to drug use.

With Grimson a practicing attorney, the three players issued a statement on Tuesday saying they were considering legal action against Cherry.

Cherry's animated rant on Oct. 6 took a decidedly different tone than the contrite version on Saturday.

"(They say) 'Oh, the reason that they're drinking, (taking) drugs and alcoholics is because they fight.' You turncoats. You hypocrites," Cherry said during CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.

"If there's one thing I'm not, it's a hypocrite ... You guys were fighters, and now you don't want guys to make the same living you did."

The words come in the wake of three former NHL enforcers dying over the summer.
