The Chicago Blackhawks are holding their annual summer fan convention--something I wish other teams would emulate--in the Windy City this weekend, so the warm fuzzies have begun in earnest. Capgeek will tell you that there's a $2.216 million elephant in the room, however, an elephant that will ensure that not every player who attends the convention will start the season with the Hawks, and NHL.com's Brian Hedger discussed the Hawks' cap overage with GM Stan Bowman on Friday: "We certainly have to be ready to go by October, that's the goal," Bowman said Friday at the annual Blackhawks Convention at the Chicago Hilton. "A lot of things change between now and then. You have to display some patience." Bowman is setting a good example, but fans and media aren't as willing to wait. The fact one, or more, players won't be with the organization much longer will be a storyline for the Blackhawks until something happens. Continue readi...

Blackhawks GM Bowman preaches patience

Stan Bowman didn’t have to answer any more questions regarding Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane’s extensions, thanks to those getting done more than a week ago. One big question still looms, however, for the Blackhawks’ general manager: How are you getting below the salary cap? OK, we all pretty much know how that’s going to happen; someone has to go. It’s more just a...

Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews happy to be ‘locked up’ in Chicago

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane didn’t really consider leaving the Chicago Blackhawks. Toews and Kane chose to avoid hitting the open market as free agents July 1, 2015 by signing identical eight-year contract extensions on July 9, reportedly worth $84 million each. “I remember when I was drafted, meeting other players from other teams [who told] me how great the city of Chicago...

10 Facts About the Chicago Blackhawks Bandwagon Fans Won’t Know

Posted to Chicago BlackhawksThe whole ‘bandwagon fan’ phenomenon in Chicago may never fade, even though it should. The Chicago Blackhawks franchise suffered through years of misery leading up to the drafting of Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, and those fans who stuck with the Blackhawks the whole way seem to look down upon ‘new’ Blackhawks fans. Whether they should or shouldn’t...

Move to Blackhawks a new challenge for Richards

Brad Richards is just getting to know the Chicago Blackhawks, so forgive him if his approach is still a little formal. After signing a one-year contract with the Blackhawks on July 1 worth a reported $2 million, the veteran center is meeting most of his new teammates this weekend at the Seventh Annual Blackhawks Fan Convention. The event, hosted at the Chicago Hilton, drew an estimated...

Posted to Gorilla Salad's Play LandThe Chicago Blackhawks are a very good team now, but in order to keep things this way and stay under the salary cap some of the talent needs to be homegrown. Enter these 6 players. We’ll take a look at the future of the Blackhawks with these slides. Phillip Danault and Mark McNeill Adam Clendening and Stephen Johns Teuvo Teravainen and...

Adam Clendening Says He Is Ready for the “Big Show”

Posted to Gorilla Salad's Play LandThe Blackhawks are right in the middle of their prospect camp and one of the few “NHL ready” players there this year firmly believes he is ready to make the jump. It isn’t far fetched at all to think that Clendening will be up this year. The biggest reason is the Blackhawks are over the cap and most likely will move one of their defensemen...

With big expectations, Saad not worried about contract

Brandon Saad would’ve loved to have his own Jonathan Toews or Patrick Kane contract moment this summer. No, we’re not talking in terms of massive money; the Blackhawks forward hasn’t gotten to that point yet. But much like Toews and Kane, he could have signed a new extension this summer. That didn’t happen, but Saad’s hardly worried about it. He has plenty of time to...

New Deals for Toews and Kane Will Keep Hawks Contending

Chicago Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman was able to knock off his number one objective of the off season after signing Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane to long, lucrative extensions last week. Toews and Kane signed the exact same contracts worth 84 million dollars over eight years. The exact details of the contract can be found here. The contracts will make Toews and Kane...

Toews & Kane could have asked for $13.8 million each

Were the new $10.5 million contracts for Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane a bargain? Apparently they could have asked for $13.8 million each, but they wanted to keep the “puzzle” together. Pat Brisson says Toews and Kane could have commanded the max of $13.8M, but wanted to keep the "puzzle" together. #Blackhawks — Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) July 16, 2014 It’s...

Oduya hopes he’s not traded, but ‘we’ll see what happens’

The Blackhawks are currently $2-plus million over the salary cap and have to get down to $69 million before the regular season begins. Oduya’s name has been bandied about in trade rumors. The defenseman, who said the Blackhawks haven’t indicated what may happen with him, added that he takes it all in stride. “We’ll see what happens,” he said. “I’m very, very happy...

It appears that the Hawks and Caps will still have to take part in HBO’s 24/7 fun

Unless they manage to catch Patrick Kane on an off night (ha ha ha, kidding...sort of), HBO's 24/7 series isn't likely to garner a whole bunch of "unforgettable" footage of the Blackhawks, especially given the way the Wings and Leafs tried so very hard to avoid becoming the next Ilya Bryzgalovs last season, but Comcast Sportsnet Chicago reports that 24/7 may remain...

Pat Foley On The Foster Hewitt Memorial Award

from Tracey Myers of CSNChicago, Pat Foley couldn’t believe it when he got the call earlier this summer: he was a Foster Hewitt Memorial Award winner and would be part of the Hockey Hall of Fame. “I asked, ‘Wasn’t there anyone else?’” Foley said on Saturday. “Truthfully, it’s still hard to wrap my head around it. But to me, this is the stuff that happens...

Blackhawks’ Toews and Kane Thank the Fans

Posted to Toews' TribeJonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are two players that any general manager would kill for and the City of Chicago is lucky enough to have the opportunity to enjoy them both on a nightly basis. Toews, arguably the best leader in hockey, and Kane, one of the very best playmakers to ever wear skates, are Blackhawks for the foreseeable future and will most likely...

Blackhawks will 'make it work' with Toews, Kane deals

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were handsomely paid in their latest extensions, eight-year deals worth $84 million each that will kick in at the 2015-16 season. They certainly could’ve gotten more. As their agent Pat Brisson said on Wednesday, “they could’ve come in at $13.8 million each.” But for Toews and Kane, it wasn’t about squeezing as much money out of the Blackhawks...
