The question is not if, but how many, as in games that the Ducks’ Corey Perry will get suspended after he drilled the Wild’s Jason Zucker.  Perry laid his right shoulder into Zucker as he was releasing the puck.  He was given a 5-minute major for interference and a game misconduct. Zucker remained flat on his back for several minutes before being helped to the locker room. The question the NHL, specifically head policeman Brendan Shanahan will have to decipher is whether Perry was targeting Zucker’s head.  There is no question that that is where the majority of the contact was (hey head, meet my shoulder), but was Perry targeting it?  Considering the hit, penalty given and the result, there is almost no question that Perry will get slapped with some kind of suspension, but the length given will be interesting. Thanks to Puck Daddy, here the NHL’s rule 48.1 on Illegal Checks to the Head: 48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was avoidable, can be considered.
